John Prentice of Sandon, Essex, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2002 and Revised 9 Oct 2009

Gill Clark, Kerry Prentice, Vicky Fitzpatrick Graham H. Ford and Jason Wilkinson have all provided input in tracing the following Prentice family tree. Here is what we have so far:

A. (Unknown Prentice). He married and had 2 or more children, including:

  1. (son) Prentice. In our Winter 2000 Prentice Newsletter article entitled Prentice Beneficiaries in Non-Prentice Wills" in the portion relating to "ADMINISTRATION BONDS," there is named "John Prentice, Sandon 1838 brother". From the wording, it is unclear whether it is (1) John Prentice who is posting the bond for a decease brother, or whether (2) John Prentice is the deceased for whom the Bond was posted by a brother. In any event, it is clear that John Prentice of Sandon had at least 1 brother.

  2. John Prentice, likely b. c. 1770-80 and perhaps in, or near, Sandon, Essex. . . . . . . . . . . . . . [1]

1. John Prentice was likely b. c. 1770-80. His place of birth is unknown. It might, or might not, have been in, or near, Sandon , Essex, where his known children were born in the period 1801 to 1812. Sandon lies just south of Chelmsford. He is likely the "John Prentice" named in connection with a "Administration Bond for a Will (See #A(i), above).and was likely living in Sandon in 1838.

Who are John Prentice's Parents?

John Prentice is such a common name that it is difficult to trace.

We do, however, have a clue: "Prentice Beneficiaries in Non-Prentice Wills" in our Winter 2000 issue shows a John Prentice of Sandon named in an 1835 Will as a "brother." This may indicate that John, #1 above, was still living there in 1835 and had a sister who made the Will.
