John Prentice, The Laird of Stone

John Prentice, The Laird of Stone
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2000 and Revised: 23 Jul 2014

Introduction

By Karen Black: Information about my Prentice connection is rather sparse and in many cases, I have made educated guesses. This genealogy is intended for personal use only. Please contact either me at karen.black@sympatico.ca or my cousin Riley Crawford-Phillips at riley@crawphil.freeserve.co.uk if you have anything to contribute or if feel that you might be connected to this family. Riley has found some of the more interesting information relating to our Prentice family, including the reference to the "Laird of Stone" in The Life of Alexander Reid.

By Linus Joseph Dewald: To Karen Black's work, I have added the results of my own research and the research of Christine Hadden. Additional possible early descendants are added, some of the earlier lines are extended, and later descendants in the United States have been added.

Generation 1

1. John Prentice, born circa 1620, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshie, Scotland, and d. 1685 per Ancestry.com . For his possible roots, see Fn. 1. John Prentice was the Laird of Stone (or Stane), it is unclear whether this refers to the area near Shotts or not.

Also,

"John Prentice....by extraordinary prowess and personal bravery, having saved the life of (Sir William) Lockhart, one of Cromwell's generals, was by him presented with the lands of Thorn (in Carluke, Lanark, Scotland), at a nominal quit-rent, as an acknowledgment of his gratitude. He afterwards held a subordinate office at Dunkirk (France), when that important fortress was reluctantly yielded up by Lockhart at the restoration, so that he was among the last who submitted to Charles the Second... (Source: The Life of Alexander Reid, Written by Himself and Edited by Archibald Prentice, His Great-Grandson, 3rd ed., Manchester, England, c1822, rep.1829; extracted from Archibald Prentice's footnote, p.33.)

The property referred to as Thorn and one known as Thornmuir, are now in ruins. A place called Thorn Cottages still exists in the rural area near Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Karen Black, a descendant, visited Thorn on a windswept day in August 1999, but the road to Thornmuir was descibed as resembling the one leading to Sleeping Beauty's castle.

He m. Christian Patterson who was b. c. 1625, Lanarkshire, Scotland, per Ancestry.com . Children of John Prentice and Christian Patterson:

Children of John Prentice and Christian Patterson

  1. Richard Prentice, perhaps b. c. 1640-50. "... his (i.e. John Prentice's) son who inherited his principles, was amongst the first to rise against that unconstitutional monarch when his intolerance and tyranny made resistance a virtue. Richard, the eldest son of John, is mentioned in Woodrow, as having been heavily fined for attending a conventicle." A conventicle was a prohibited meeting of any religious group which disputed the authority of the Church of England. (Source: The Life of Alexander Reid, Written by Himself and Edited by Archibald Prentice, His Great-Grandson, 3rd ed., Manchester, England, c1822, rep.1829; extracted from Archibald Prentice's footnote, p.34.)

  2. Henry Prentice, bap. 11 Jan 1640, Cambusnethan.
  3. Archibald2 Prentice, perhaps b. c. 1646. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]

For possible additional children of John, see Fn. 2.

3. Archibald Prentice, perhaps b. c. 1646, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. ibid, Archibald "whose son afterward married the daughter of Alexander Reid" was described as "the second son of (the above) John Prentice." Others: See See Fn. 2

We are told by his grandson Archibald Prentice of Manchester, England that as a Covenanter, Archibald fought at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge on 22 Jun 1679. Many lost their lands if they were even suspected of being at Bothwell, and those who were actively engaged and who would not renounce the principles (of Presbyterianism) which induced them to take up arms, were fortunate if they escaped the scaffold.

Possibly because his family had been under the protection of the grateful Sir William Lockhart as I mentioned in his father's notes, Archibald Prentice of Stone was exposed to less persecution than his friend Alexander Reid. He also managed to ride home from Bothwell without anyone observing him, except a weaver who lived on Calderwater.

During the subsequent years of oppression, the weaver often used to visit Stone, where he would remark, "Oh, Laird, it was a lucky thing that naebody saw you at Bothwell but me." "Indeed it was," the Laird would answer, "but you're a discreet body, and will say nothing about; gang awa, and fill your poke with a meal, for I fancy that's what ye're came for."

The revolution of 1688, which restored the liberties of an oppressed people, relieved the Laird of Stone from the petty extractions of the weaver. (Source: The Life of Alexander Reid, Written by Himself and Edited by Archibald Prentice, His Great-Grandson, 3rd ed., Manchester, England, c1822, rep.1829; extracted from Archibald Prentice's footnote, p.33.)

4.23. John Prentice, b. 13 Feb 1873, Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland.

He m. Martha Patterson Cleland in 1908 Martha was b. 2 Nov 1873 in Lesmahagow and d. 30 Mar 1918 in Vancouver. John is the great-grandfather of Maree Gormley. John was a master blacksmith on Alexander St. Coatbridge. John and his wife left Scotland in 1908 for Vancouver, and after the birth of his 2 daughters and the death of his wife, he moved to New Zealand. John lived to a fairly old age before he died after being struck by a tram. Jean also lived to quite an old age. Children (per Maree Gormley, email, 26 Dec 2002 and David James Dodds, email, 12 Jul 2003):

4.24. George Prentice (son George Prentice and Margaret Duthie) was b. c. 1878 (per 1930 census) in in Livingston, Midlothian, Scotland, as were his parents.

Christine Hadden's email of 4 Jul 2014 indicates that George sailed from the UK aboard the Orca on 22 Oct 1923 with his son, John age 14 (b. c. 1909) and son, David, age 7 (b. c. 1916) and that they had an Edinburgh residence. They are on the Ancestry.coms Ellis Island records on Page 100, arriving on Nov 1, 1923. It looks as if they were going to stay with George's son James in Pennsylvania. (Haven't found his immigration record yet)

George and John did obviously arrive, but we have problem with George's son, David. David does not appear with George and his family in 1930 census records. The answer might be that David died between 1923 and and the 1930 census.

George and his family settled in 1924 at 28 Church St., Herminie, PA. He appears in the 1930 census in Indiana, Allegheny Co., PA, where he was a Timberman in a Coal Mine.

He m. 1st Margaret Smith Prentice (yes - maiden name was Prentice, and she appears on the 1901 census with George), b.c. 1875 Carnwath, married on 15 June 1900 at Whitburn, Scotland. Christine Hadden believes her parents to be James Prentice (son of David Prentice and Margaret Smith) and Susan Glass. They had a daughter, Margaret born 24 Apr 1874 in Carnwath, and it would make sense for her to be the correct Margaret Smith Prentice as her grandmother was Margaret Smith. Children of George Prentice and Margaret Smith Prentice:

  1. George Prentice, b. 1901, Livingston, Midlothian, Scotland
  2. James Prentice b. 10 April 1905, Livingston, Scotland. Christine Hadden's email of 7 Jul 2014 says that his father's 1923 sailing record indicates he was going to the US to stay with his son, James, aleady in the US. It is unclear whether he is the James Prentice, b. c. 1906, Scotland, who appears in the 1940 census in Cowanshannock, Armstrong Co., PA, with his wife, Mary, b. c. 1899, PA, with children:
    1. John F. Prentice, b. c. 1923, PA. 1940 at home. Not in 2014 SSDI.

  3. John Prentice, b. c. 1909, Scotland. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [4.25]
  4. Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1913, Lanark., Scotland. 1930 at home. 1940 not in census. It is unclear whether he is the Alexander Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 27 Jun 1915, obtained his SS# in PA, and d. 30 Apr 2003 in Galeton, Potter Co., PA. If so, his wife might be the Helen Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 28 Apr 1919, obtained her SS# in PA, and d. Nov 1985 in Galeton, Potter Co., PA.
  5. David Prentice, b. 1916, Scotland.

He m. 2nd Mary Nicol in 1918, Edinburgh, Midlothian, St. Giles District, Scotland. She was b. c. 1885, Scotland, as were her parents , George Nicol and Mary McGowan.

Ellis Island immigration records describe her as arriving aboard the "Assyria" with her sons, Alexander and William, on 20 Nov 1924, born in "Lanark." (Lanark or Lanarkshire?), Scotland, 5', brown hair, blue eyes.

Children of George and his 2nd wife per 1930 census:

5. Archibald Bauldy Prentice (David4, Archibald2, John1), born about 23 Jun 1734 and chr. 23 Jun 1734 in Shotts, Lanark, Scotland; died about 13 Jun 1813; buried in St. Michael's churchyard, Covington, Lanark, Scotland.

Archibald was a descendant of the old Cameronians of Scotland. He was the first-discussed Archibald on pg. 356 of the C. J. F. Binney's 1883 Edition of our Prentice book. Alexander Reid, a grandfather on the maternal side, was one of the covenanters, born in 1646 and died in 1706. He did not come to America.

Archibald was a "Farmer of Covington Mains, near Biggar, in Lanarkshire, whom (Robbie) Burns visited on 27th November 1786, en route for Edinburgh. There was 'a most agreeable little party in the evening.' Burns stayed the night at Hillhead Farm, with Mr and Mrs Stodhart--described by Burns as 'a glorious good fellow with a still more glorious wife' --and Prentice joined them for breakfast on the 28th. Prentice was an admirer of the poet, and subscribed for twenty copies of the first Edinburgh Editon of his Poems. In a letter dated 29th November 1786, to George Reid, who lent Burns a pony to ride to Edinburgh, the poet described Prentice: "For Mr Prentice, no words can do him justice. Sound sterling sense and plain warm hospitality are truly his." Source: The Burns Encyclopedia at: The Burns Encyclopedia.

We visited Covington in Aug. 1999 and found the old Prentice house much the same, although the 18th century farmhouse has been well maintained. People still remember the Lindsays who occupied the house after the Prentices. Covington Mains shares some land with the remains of an ancient, fortified house. St. Michael's, the adjacent church, has recently been sold, but it is still possible to locate the grave of Archibald Prentice and Helen Stodhart and David Prentice and Agnes Reid with the help of Sheila Scott's Monumental Inscriptions, although the raised and flattened tombstone is disfigured with moss. The road next to Covington Mains winds up to Hillhead Farm, through a snarl of grey-stoned buildings with a panoramic view. A plaque commemorating Robbie Burns' visit is found at the foot of this road.

He married 1st Margaret Prentice, born 1743; died about 14 Jul 1776. Children of Archibald5 Prentice and his first wife, Margaret Prentice, were as follows:

The headstone also mentions "Wm Paterson Lindsay, 2nd son of Hugh Lindsay and Helen Paterson, died Liverpool 26.7.1902, 29 (b. c. 1873)". It is unclear how he is related to Janet Prentice and Hugh Lindsay.
  2. David Prentice, christened 21 Dec 1766, died about 23 Jan 1775, buried in St. Michael's Churchyard, Covington, Lanark, Scotland. According to an entry in Sheila Scott's Monumental Inscriptions, the following inscription was not found when Covington Cemetery (St. Michael's) was checked in 1972, although someone must have attempted an earlier transcription: "David Prentice son of Archibald P in Covingtoun 23.1.1775..."
  3. Agnes Prentice, christened 25 Dec 1768.
  4. Margaret Prentice, christened 20 Jan 1771, Covington and Mains. She married Thomas Somerville on 23 Dec 1796, Covington and Thankerton.

A biographical sketch for Isaac C. Guest in the form of an internet posting reads as follows:

I am searching any information on the GUEST family in Red River County. My 3rd great grand-father Isaac GUEST, Sr. Moved there from TN, in 1838. He settled there with two brothers (I don't know their names) and several children.

His 1st wife was Elizabeth FRAZIER. Their children were: Isaac II, John Martin( his wife was Mary Kathrine & quot;Polly" Dickson), William (he was sheriff of Red River Co. In 1860's) and Elizabeth.

His 2nd wife was Mary Terry Ball from AL. Their children were: J. Calvin, Orlena, Mary,& Rhoda. He also had a sister named Roda. Isaac Guest II married Ann Wheeler. Their children were: Isaac III, Joseph, Mary, &Amp;Malissa. Isaac II was killed in a wagon accident in 1844 in Moscow, TN. While preparing to move settlers to TX. Isaac III was a civil war vet. He served from 1861-1865 with the Red River Volunteers of the 11th Texas Calvary.

His 3rd wife was Jennie DICK. They were married March 18, 1870. Their children were: Isaac Wheeler born 1871, Thomas born 1873, Mary Agnes born 1879, Katie Augusta born 1884, John Calvin born 1881, Isabella Graham born 1876, Ruby born 1888, and Pearl born 1891.

Jennie DICK's parents , Capt. Thomas P. DICK and Agnes PRENTICE came from Lanarkshire Scotland. The area that they settled was South of Detroit, TX. It was called the Liberty Community. The area around it was known as Guest's Prairie. Any information on any of these individuals would be greatly appreciated. I will share with any one connected with the Guest family. He helped to found the Manchester Gazette in 1821 as the organ of radical opinion, which was incorporated (in 1828) with the Manchester Times. (He was sole Manager of the new paper in 1828); he obtained the transfer of the centre of anti-Corn Law agitation from London to Manchester, 1836 and, in 1838 assisted in forming the anti-Corn Law League. He devoted his paper solely to the interests of free trade. He was compelled to relinquish his post in 1847 after the establishment in 1845 of a rival radical journal, the Manchester Examiner, which was started in the manufacturing interest and proved a serious blow to the Times.

He visited Louisville, KY in 1847 in time to attend the funeral of his brother’s oldest son, killed by an assassin. That son was perhaps John Prentice who went from Lanark, Scotland to Louisville, KY or a son of his. After his death, the family went to Texas.

In 1851 he published a second edition of historical sketches and personal recollections of Manchester, "dedicated to his cousins, Elizabeth, Agnes and Beatrice Prentice of Castle Park, Lanark, Scotland, great granddaughters of Archibald Prentice and Alexander Reid who fought at "Bothwell Brig" 1649, and grand-nieces of James Thompson, the author of the "Seasons," etc., and sisters of David Prentice, founder and editor, until his death in 1837, of the Glasgow Chronicle."

He lived in Glasgow from about 1809-11 and then traveled for his employer for three years. Soon after, Archibald took a warehouse in Manchester, with all the Glasgow stock. His widow survived him and was alive in 1874. His only child, a daughter named Mary, above, b. c. 1826, died some years earlier.

Fn. 1: Glasgow record show the following persons at Monifieth which lies along the coast about 10 miles east of Dundee, which, in turn, lies about 40-50 miles north of Edinburgh. However, Monifieth lies about 75-85 miles NE of Cambusnethan where John appears and that distance suggests they might not be related:

  • (unknown) Prenty, son of Alexander Prenty, chr. 17 OCT 1591, Monifieth.
  • Margret Prenty, dau. of Alexander Prenty, chr. 3 Jun 1593, Monifieth.
  • Rot (Robert?) Prentie, son(?) of Andro Prentie, chr. 20 Aug 1603, Monifieth.
  • Katrein Prentie, dau. of Andro Prentie, chr. 8 Jun 1606, Monifieth.
  • Isbell Pentie, dau. of Andro Prentie, chr. 12 Jul 1608, Monifieth.

From those entries, one might infer that John Prentice was b. before 1591 and this father was Alexander Prentice. One might also infer that Andro (Andrew?) is a brother of Alexander. Such speculations, however, need further investigation before they can be accepted as fact.

Fn. 2: Glasgow record contain christening records which may indicate additional children of John Prentice. Those records show the following:

However, further investigation is needed before they can be accepted as John's children.
