John Prentice, Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland

John Prentice of Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2001 and Revised 24 Jan 2011

We are helping Kim Pasquill in tracing her Prentice family tree. Here is what we have so far:

1. John Prentice was b. c. 1775-1780 perhaps in the general area of Hamilton where he married.

He m. Violet Wilsonon 1 Dec 1799 in St. Quivox, Scotland. Christine Hadden advises that their banns were called in Hamilton on Aug. 3rd and 17th, 1800. She was the dau. of John & Rebecca Wilson,. Known children:

  1. James Prentice, b. 15 Oct 1802, Hamilton. He may have d. c. 1805.
  2. John Prentice, b. 21 Jan 1806, Hamilton. He may have d. c. 1808.
  3. William Prentice, b. 29 Dec 1809, Hamilton.
  4. David Prentice, b. 22 Jul 1811.

By email of 25 Mar 2006, Christine Hadden advises that there are 2 ambiguous gravestones for Prentices in the graveyard at Hamilton Parish Church, Lanarkshire:

  1. "The burying place of John Prentice, his wife and their children 1805" One might infer that it refers to the death of James, above, b. 1802.

  2. "1st Oct 1808 John Prentice and Violet Wilson, his spouse and their family."One might infer that it refers to the death of John, above, b. 1806.

Who are John Prentice's Parents?

Although only an educated guess at this point, John may be the John Prentice who was chr. 12 May 1776 at Carnwath, son of James Prentice and Margaret Meikle. Carnwath lies about 15 miles east, and a bit south, of Hamilton.
