James Prentice of Linlithgow, Scotland

James Prentice of Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2001 and Revised 23 Dec 2006

We are helping Chris Rodgers in tracing the ancestry of his great-great-grandfather. Here is what we have so far:

1. James Prentice may have been b. c. 1820-1825 and at an unknown location, but perhaps in, or near, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland. However, an 1841 search for a James Prentice, b. in that general time frame in West Lothian, does not disclose any men of that name. He may have d. before 1861 as his wife, Barbara, appears without him in the 1861 census.

James m. Barbara Blair. She was b. c. 1825, Parish, Linlithgow. Children per IGI and 1861 Linlithgow census:

  1. Margaret Johnston Blair Prentice, b. 3 Mar 1851 Linlithgow (the 1861 census says b. Carriden, Linlithgow), West Lothian, Scotland. She married John Steel in the parish of Linlithgow on 11 Jul 1868. The 1881 census shows them living in East Carriber, Linlithgow, with 7 children, all born in Bo'ness, Falkirk, Scotland:
    1. Barbara Steel, b. c. 1869
    2. Mary Steel, b. c. 1871
    3. Elizaeth Steel, b. c. 1873
    4. James Steel, b. c. 1875
    5. Margaret Steel, b. c. 1877
    6. Agnes Steel, b. c. 1879
    7. Ann Steel, b. c. 1880
  2. Ann Young Prentice, b. 27 Feb 1853 Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland. At home in the 1861 census in Linlithgow.
