Frank W. Prentiss of MA and Delta, IA

Frank W. Prentiss of MA and Delta, Keokuk Co., IA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2002 and Revised 6 Mar 2008

Update of 6 Mar 2008: Frank W. Prentice is #145ii and #145.2 in our John-3 eBook.

1. Frank W. Prentiss was b. Oct 1847 in MA and by 1869 had emigrated to IA. He appears in the 1870 census in Clear Creek, Keokuk Co., IA with his surname spelled "Prentice" and in the 1880, 1900 and 1910 Warren and Delta, Keokuk Co., IA census with his wife and family.

He m. Helen/Hellen A., b. Jun 1851 in PA. Children:

  1. William E. Prentice, b. c. 1869, IA (per 1870 census). Not shown in 1880 and probably deceased.
  2. Eva Prentiss, b. c. 1873, IA (per 1880 census).
  3. May Prentiss, b. c. 1876, IA (per 1880 census).
  4. Earnest C. Prentiss, b. Nov. 1885, IA (per 1900 census). Not in SSDI.
  5. Arthur A. Prentiss, b. Sep 1889, IA (per 1900 and 1920 census). He was living with his mother in 1920, age 31, and apparently unmarried. Arthur is not in the SSDI.

Frank may be deceased by 1920 (he would have been 73) since his wife, Helen, is shown in the 1920 Delta census as living with her son, Arthur, who apparently was still unmarried.

No other Prentice appears in the 1870 Keokuk Co., IA census, but Frank W. Prentiss is quite likely a brother to N. A. Prentiss, b. c. 1839-40 in MA, who also appears in the 1880 Delta census with his wife, Jennie, b. c. 1847 in England, and daughter:

  1. Nettie G. Prentiss, b. c. 1871, IA.

Who are Frank W. Prentiss' Parents?

The only clue we have so far is the 1910 census which says that both of his parents were b. in MA.

We note that the 1859 census shows a Franki W. Prentiss, b. c. 1846, MA, and living in Becket, Berkshire Co., MA, with his parents,

Investigation is continuing.
