Edmund D. Prentis of England and NY

Edmund D. Prentis of England and NY
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2002 and Revised 1 Feb 2011

1. Edmund D/A Prentis was b. Aug 1857 in England. He appears in the 1900 New York City, NY census with his wife and family.

He m. Mary Frances Campbell, b. Mar 1865 in MA, and children:

  1. Catherine Prentis, b. Mar 1882, NY.
  2. Edmund Prentis, b. Dec 1883, NY. . . . . . [2]

He may be the same person as the Edmund Prentis who appears in the 1880 New York City census as an unmarried "Clerk To Consulate Great Britain."

2. Edmund Astley Prentis, b. 6 Dec 1883, NY, and d. 1967, probably NY. He is probably the Edmund Prentiss, b. c. 1883-4, who appears in the 1920 New York City census. He was then apparently unmarried and living in a rooming house. He is likely the Edmund Prentis,b. 4 Dec 1884, who returned to New York City from a trip from Vera Cruz, Mexico, aboard the SS Morro Castle on 27 May 1921. His address at that time was 408 West 23rd St., New York City. Apparently accompanying him on his return from Vera Cruz was a young woman named Catherine Murphy living at that same address.

He is described in http://research.frick.org/directoryweb/browserecord.php?-action=browse&-recid=7305 as:

An engineer, a principal of the international engineering company Spencer, White and Prentis Inc. of New York, and a collector of early Americana.

Prentis was the former president of the American Standards Society, a New York Historical Society Trustee, a former president of Columbia University's Engineering Alumni Association, and a trustee of the University.

A short biographical note can be found at Who's Who in Engineering .

He appears in the 1930 Manhatten, NYC census as Edmond Prentis, b. c. 1883 with his wife, Daisy B., b. c. 1889, NY and son, Edmond, above (note different spelling):

  1. Edmond Astley Prentis III, shown in the SSDI as b. 12 Dec 1923, probably in NY. . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]

3. Edmond Astley Prentis III, shown in the SSDI as b. 12 Dec 1923, probably in NY, and d. c. 11 Aug 1997 in Delray Beach, Palm Beach, FL.

His obituary reads as folllows:

    Edmund A. Prentis 3d, Engineer, 73
    Published: August 16, 1997

Edmund Astley Prentis 3d, a principal of the international engineering company Spencer, White and Prentis Inc. of New York and a champion croquet player, died on Monday at his home in Delray Beach, Fla. He was 73.

His son Peter said the cause of death was congestive heart failure.

A graduate of Yale who served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, Mr. Prentis was the principal stockholder, director and treasurer of the company, which specialized in underground and underpinning construction. Among its projects were the underground areas of the White House, the World Trade Center and sections of the New York subway system.

He was a founding member and past president of the Westhampton Mallet Club and was active in developing croquet as a national sport. With his son Edmund A. Prentis 4th he won two United States Croquet Association national doubles championships and in 1982 was inducted into the association's Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; his two sons, Edmund, of Delray Beach and Peter, of Riverside, Conn., and Quogue, N.Y.; two daughters, Tricia Prentis-Erwin of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Katherine Prentis Knuff of West Chester, Pa., and five grandchildren.

He m. Betty, living in 1997. Children per his obituary, above:

  1. Edmund, Prentis of Delray Beach.
  2. Peter Prentis of Riverside, CT, and Quogue, NY.
  3. Tricia Prentis. She m. Mr. Erwin and lived in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
  4. Katherine Prentis. She m. Mr. Knuff and lived in West Chester, Pa.,

Who are Edmund D. Prentis' Parents?

Although there is a difference of 1 year in his birth date, but because of the somewhat unusual spelling of the surname as "Prentis," there is a chance that Edmund D. Prentis might be the Edmund Prentis, b. 14 Aug 1856 who is #9.2(i) in our Spring 2001 article at Prentices of Bilton Ainsty, etc. , son of Edmond/Edmund Stevens Prentis & Anne C. Crowther Weaver..

That possibility is reinforced by Tricia Prentis-Erwin's email of 5 Jan 2005 in which she tells us that her grandfather, Edmund Astley Prentis Jr. wrote a book on his ancestors called "Prentis Speaking." Refering to the link, above, she says that she recognizes Ann Crowther Weaver, wife of #9.2, Edmond/Edward Stevens Prentice, as an ancestor and says that the original name (Edmund Astley Prentis) came from the name Stevens. Apparently my great grandfather was given his step-father's name of Prentis when his mother remarried. Tricia promises to send along more material soon.
