Update of 21 Jan 2011. Arthur Prentice, #2 below, is #10.2(2)(a) in our Spring 2001 article entitled Prentices of Bilton Ainsty, etc . That article now replaces this article.
1. Elizabeth Prentice, shown, without a husband, appears in the IGI as the mother of:
- Arthur Prentice, chr. 6 Jun 1870, Tockwith, Yorkshire. . . . . [2]
2. Arthur Prentice, chr. 6 Jun 1870, Tockwith, Yorkshire. Tockwith is only a few miles west of Upper Poppleton. He appears in the 1881 census in the home of Francis and Fanny Cawood at No. 17 Bright St., Wortley In Bramley, York, where he is called their nephew. Arthur's mother, Elizabeth, does not appear to have a sister named Fanny or a sister b. the year Fanny was born, so perhaps a Mr. Cawood is Francis Cawood's brother and Arthur's father.
Arthur m. Harriet Hewick. She was b. 1853, Tockwith, Yorkshire..
Arthur was a corn buyer and was killed when his horse bolted while driving home. His daughter was still in school at the time of his death. After his death, Harriet m. a George Backhouse in 1889 and are shown by the 1891 census as living in Tockwith. George was about 10 years younger than Harriet. (per Dave Backhouse, email, 17 Apr 2003). Daughter of Arthur and Harriet:
- Elizabeth Prentice. . . . . . [3]
3. Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1890-1910 in Tockwith. She left school at the age of 11 and d. c. 1969-70. She m. Joseph Kendall at Dringhouses. He was b. 1881 in York, Yorkshire, and d. in Rufforth Yorkshire West Riding. They lived in Price St, York during WW1 and saw a Zeppelin overhead. Harriet lived in Rufforth most of her life and d. c. 1969-70 at York Hospital. Children per Ancestry.com :
- Arthur Kendall 1942
- Doris E Kendall 1909 1999
- (5 more sons and 1 daughter).
The 1871 Tockwith, Yorkshire, census shows Arthur Prentice as the grandson of George Prentice, b. c. 1805, Thorp Arch, Yorkshire, and his wife, Mary, b. c. 1807, Hopperton, Yorkshire. For George and his family, see our Spring 2001 article about Prentices of Bilton Ainsty, etc. where George is #10.3. Thus, Arthur's mother, Elizabeth:
- might be George's daughter, Elizabeth, b. c. 1846,
- or might be the wife of a deceased son of George, or
- might be the son of George Prentice Jr., b. c. 1848, Tockwith, Yorkshire because Arthur appears on the line immediately below George, but with no wife named.
