    William Prentice of Paris, Ontario and Sinclairville, Chautauqua Co., NY

    1. William Prentice was likely born c. 1810 to 1830 and, according to the 1900 census entry for his son, William, he was b. in Scotland as was his wife, Sarah Coutts. By about 1850 they were living in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada which lies about halfway between Buffalo and Detroit. William died 5 Feb 1917 and Margaret in 1914, both in Sinclairville, Chautauqua Co., NY. We know that they had at least one son:

    1. William Prentice, b. c. 1850, Woodstock, Ontario. . . . . . . . . [2]

    2. William Prentice was b. c. 1850 in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada. Woodstock lies about halfway between Buffalo, NY and Detroit, MI. William was a Blacksmith and the son of William, #1 above.

    He is likely the same person as the William Prentice shown in the 1881 census in Blandford, Oxford North, Ontario who was Ethnic Irish, b. c. 1851, England (note the different ethnic origin and different birth place), Blacksmith, Religion Weslyan Methodist, wth his wife, Margeitt, b. c. 1857, Ontario, and son:

    1. William Prentice, Ethnic Irish, b. c. 1879, Ontario.

    William was the manager of a retail hardware store in Sinclairville.

    He married Margaret Laugheed. The 1900 census indicates Margaret was b. Jul 1859 in Canada, that her father was b. in Scotland and her mother in Canada, also in Paris, Ontario, Canada (Ref: Dee Davidson, Message Board, 5 Oct 2004. She was the daughter of Joshua Laugheed and Mary Ann Devaux (sp?). They appear in the 1900 census in Charlotte Twp., Chautauqua Co., NY. Children:

    1. William George Prentice, b. 14 Sep 1878 in Paris, Canada and d. 1 Jul 1961. Paris is probably the Paris, Ontario, which lies about 80 west of Buffalo, NY. Bur. in Lot 394 of Evergreen Cem. in Sinclairville. His obituary relates that he emigrated to the US when he was 7, about 1886. He was the manager of a retail hardware store in Sinclairville. He married M. Jennie (surname unknown).

    2. Clara A. Prentice, b. Dec 1884, NY. She m. Frank T. Denison.

    3. Jennie Prentice, b. c. 1883 and d. 1973. Bur. in Lot 394, Evergreen Cemetery, Sinclaireville.

    Who are William Prentice's Parents?

    We do not yet know the identity of William's parents, but he may be related to James Prentice of Zanesville, Muskingham Co., OH discussed in our Spring 2001 issue.
