    Summer 2000 and Revised: 22 Dec 2006

We are helping Doug Leith trace the ancestry of his Helen Prentice who m. Alexander Whitelaw on 15 Jun 1866 at Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland.

Although confirmation is needed, we think we have traced her Prentice back to Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1775-1790, who m. Agnes Anderson. The IGI indicates Thomas was b. c. 1787, but contains no further information about him or his parents. Thomas and Agnes had a son:

    1. George Prentice, who the IGI shows as b. 8 Dec 1810 at Livingston and chr. 5 May 1811 at Livingston (the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census says he was b. c. 1813 and in 1841, 1851 and 1861 was living in Livingston, West Lothian). According to the marriage certificate of his daughter, Helen, George was deceased by 15 Jun 1866. He is probably the George Prentice who m. Helen Geddes on 14 May 1837 at Livingston, West Lothian. Helen was b. c. 1814, , Lasswade, Edinburghshire (per 1841 and 1861 census). Children:
