Sylvester Bemis Prentiss of MA, GA and KS

The 1870 Lawrence, Douglas Co., KS census identifies Samuel B. Prentiss, Physician, b. c. 1817 in MA, his wife, Annie J., b. c. 1843 in ME. The Soule Genealogy correctly identifies them as Sylvester Bemis Prentiss and Ann Julia Soule. Children shown in the census:
It also appears from the 1880 and 1900 Canon City, Fremont, CO census that Sylvester may have at least one additional son, Joseph L. Prentiss, b. c. 1842 in GA. Given his c. 1842 birth date, he may be a son of earlier marriage by Sylvester. It is apparently Frank, above and born c. 1859 who is shown in Joseph's household and called Joseph's brother. Also shown is Joseph's wife, Marion, b. c. 1851 in OH and their children:
- Ella Prentiss, b. c. 1854 in GA.
- Frank Prentiss, b. c. 1859 in KS. He apparently is living with another brother, Joseph L. Prentiss, in the 1880 Canon City census (see below). He is also apparently the Frank Prentiss who appears, unmarried in the 1900 Canon City census.
- (male) Prentiss, b. c. 1870, KS
- George A. Prentiss, b. Feb 1865, KS. He is shown in the 1900 Canon City census with his wife, Gertrude, b. Feb 1873, CO with their daughter:
- Mary Prentiss, b. Sep 1898, CO
Also shown in George's home in 1900 is his father, Joseph, and a stepmother, Martha, b. Jan 1840 in India, as well as Marion L. Prentiss, b. Oct 1883 in CO and called a step-brother to George. Marion may be a son of Joseph and Martha.
- Edward L. Prentiss, b. c. 1869, KS. He appears, unmarried, in the 1900 Denver, Arapahoe, CO census.
- James H. Prentiss, b. c. 1872, Fremont Co., CO
Update: 1 Aug 1999: Sylvester Bemis Prentiss has now been identified as a descendant of Valentine Prentice.
