Scotland Church Census Records
Spring 2000 and Revised: 1 Feb 2000

The first official census was undertaken in 1801. However, before 1841 those Census records are of little use to the genealogist.

We look at a census in order to glean facts about each person in the household. Unfortunately, those persons were not methodically named in the UK Census schedules before 1841.

But there is good news, courtesy of Alister M. Cameron. In some parishes, even before 1841, the Parish would make their own congregation's Census independent of central government. So, if one knows the ancestral parish, one can look Family History Library Catalogue to see if that parish had a pre-1841 census.
