Update of 8 Jun 2001: John Prentice's parents are Alexander Prentice and Jane Linsay. See botton of article. For an updating article which supercedes this article, see our Summer 2001 article on Alexander Prentice of Carluke, Scotland .

Original Article: We are helping Margaret Pearcy and Sandy Prentice Pearcy in tracing the ancestry of John Prentice, born 26 Aug 1836 in Crawford Walls, Scotland and d. 23 Apr 1909 in Minden, Haliburton Co, Ontario, Canada. He married Christina McColl, also of Scotland on 18 Mar 1856. She was b. 1836 in Lanarkshire, Scotland and d. 1912 in Minden.

On their wedding day the boarded a ship which carried them to Canada. After living in Carluke, Ontario and Minden, Ontario, he eventually settled in Alberton, Ontario in 1856 and was a dealer in general merchandise. Perhaps he operated the country store, or one like it, which is still there today.

John Prentice and his wife Christina McColl are both buried in the Minden Cemetery in Haliburton County along with a number of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Alberton, although quite small, still exists today at the intersection of Highway 2 and Alberton Road. Alberton is on Highway 2 between Ancaster and Brantford, Ontario. It consists of a school, country store, a garage and a few houses and perhaps a farm.

Children of John and Christina:

Update of 26 Jan 2001

By email of 22 Jan 2001, Sandi Prentice Pearcy advises that John's parents are Alexander Prentice and Jane Linsay. She says Alexander died in 1889 and is buried in Carluke.

The IGI and Sandi Prentice Pearcy's letter of 1 Feb 2001 indicate that Alexander and Jane had additional children:

Christine Hadden's email of 25 Jan 2001 suggests that Alexander Prentice may be the Alexander Prentice shown in the 1881 Carluke census. He was then age 82 and b. c. 1799. His occupation was "Formerly Sawyer."

Also living in Alexander's home in the 1881 Carluke census was John Liddell, grandson, age 11 and b. 1870, Carluke. He would be the John Alexander Prentice Liddell shown in the IGI as b. 12 Nov 1869, Carluke, Lanark, Scotland, son of Janet Lindsay Prentice and Lohn Liddell.

Christine Hadden advises that Alexander does not appear in the IGI, nor did she see a headstone for him in the Carluke Old Churchyard Monument Inscriptions. However, Bryan Prentice, in his letter of 22 Mar 2001, advises that he has photos of Alexander's headstone in the Old Carluke Cemetery. Alexander does not appear in our own copies of Scotland birth and christening records; that may indicate he was born at a place other than Lanarkshire.
