Original Article:   We are helping Anthony B. Prentice of Auckland, NZ in tracing the ancestry of his Steven Filgate Prentice who migrated to New Zealand from England in the late 1800s. He married Hannah Down, daughter of George Down, an English 'remittance' man. Steven later went to Australia and is believed to have perished in the Australian gold fields. His widow remarried.

A search of the IGI indicates that Steven Filgate Prentice was b. 2 Aug 1842 at Pentonville, London, England. son of Stephen Grigson Prentice and Sophia Simmonds.

The IGI also identifies Stephen Grigson Prentice as chr. 25 Mar 1818 at St. Andrew, Holborn, London, son of James Prentice and his wife, Amelia.

At this point the IGI is confusing. It indicates that a James Filgate Prentice m. Amelia Grant Gill on 26 Apr 1819 at St. Martin In The Fields, Westminster, London. Given James' middle name of "Filgate," it seems likely that he is the "James Prentice" who is father of Stephen Grigson Prentice even though the marriage year is a year earlier than James' christening. It may be that either the 1818 christening year is an error or that the 1819 marriage year is an error.

We do not know for certain when James Filgate Prentice was born. A guess would be that he was born in the 1790s. The IGI shows only one James Prentice born christened in London in that general time frame; he is James Prentice,chr. 23 Jun 1793 at St. Luke Old Street, Finsbury, London, son of John Prentice and Anne.

We can construct a tentative family tree for Steven Filgate Prentice as follows, but with a word of caution that additional confirming documentation is needed before it can be accepted as accurate:

1. John Prentice, b. c. 1750-1773. He m. Anne whose surname is not yet yet known. They had at least one child, a son:

• James Filgate Prentice, chr. 23 Jun 1793, St. Luke Old Street, Finsbury, London. He m. Amelia Grant Gill on 26 Apr 1819(?) at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London. Presently known children:

  • Amelia Marie Prentice, chr. 1 Apr 1821 at St. Andrew, Holborn, London. (per IGI)

  • Mary Ann Prentice, chr. 19 Oct 1823 at St. Andrew, Holborn, London. (per IGI)

  • Stephen Grigson Prentice, chr. 15 Mar 1818(?) at St. Andrew, Holborn, London. He m. Sophia Simmonds. Presently known, or possible, children:

    • (perhaps) William Prentice, chr. 16 Sep 1838, St. Mary, Rotherhithe, London, England. However, the IGI identifies him as the son of Stephen John Prentice and Sophia.

    • Steven Filgate Prentice, b. 2 Aug 1842 at Pentonville, London, England. . . . . . . . [2]

2. Steven Filgate Prentice, b. 2 Aug 1842 at Pentonville, London, England. son of Stephen Grigson Prentice and Sophia Simmonds. In the late 1800s he emigrated to New Zealand where he later married Hannah Down, daughter of George Down, an English 'remittance' man. Steven later went to Australia and is believed to have perished in the Australian gold fields. His widow remarried. Childen of Steven and Hannah:
