    Using the records available from Records Office in Glascow, Scotland, and information from Carol Novak, we have compiled the following tentative family tree for James Prentice of Carstairs, Scotland.

    1. William Prentice of Carstairs, b. c. 1644-54. He married Catherine Henchlewood on 31 Dec 1675 at Carstairs. His children include: 

    	i.	Margret Prentice, chr. 29 Oct 1673, Carstairs.  She may
		be a daughter by a prior marriage.
	ii.	Agnes Pentice, chr. 4 Feb 1675, Carstairs.
	iii.	(unknown) Prentice, chr. 11 Jan 1677, Carstairs.
	iv.	James Prentice, chr. 16 Jan 1679, Carstairs.		[2]

    2. James Prentice, chr. 16 Jan 1679, is probably the same person as the James Prentice who married Isabell Forrest 23 Jan 1717 at Carstairs. Their children, born at Carstairs, included: 

    	i.	Anne Prentice, chr. 9 Feb 1718.  She m. James Wilson
		27 Oct 1851, Carstairs.
	ii.	William Prentice, chr. 20 Mar 1720.			[3]
	iii.	Isabell Prentice, chr. 28 Jan 1722.

    3. William Prentice, chr. 9 Feb 1718, Carstairs, married Katherine Wallace on 18 Aug 1745, Carluke, Scotland. Their children include

    1. William Prentice, chr. 1 Dec 1745, Carstairs. [4]
    2. James Prentice, chr. 23 Aug 1747 Carstairs. He married Helen Grozel (Grozet, Grosset) 18 Apr 1773, Carstairs. Children:
      1. Marion Prentice, chr. 22 Aug 1773, Carstairs.
      2. Katherine Prentice, chr. 28 Apr 1776, Carstairs.
      3. William Prentice, chr. 28 Apr 1776, Carstairs. May have died before 1780 (see below).
      4. Isobel Prentice, chr. 23 Aug 1778, Carstairs.
      5. William Prentice, chr. 16 Jun 1780, Carstairs.

    3. Katherine Prentice, chr. 7 May 1749, Carstairs. She married Allan Aitken 8 Dec 1771, Carstairs.
    4. George Prentice, chr. 21 Apr 1751, Carstairs. He married Margaret Grenshels 30 Aug 1778, Carstairs. Children not shown on Glasgow records for births and christenings.
    5. John Prentice, chr. 8 Apr 1753, Cadder. No marriage shown for John in Carstairs. May have died or married elsewhere.
    6. William Prentice, chr. 9 Mar 1755, Carstairs. No marriage shown for John in Carstairs. May have died or married elsewhere.
    7. Isobel Prentice, chr. 3 Mar 1760, Carstairs, and d. 10 Dec 1829, age 69. She marrried William Wilson 31 Aug 1783, Carstairs. He was b. c. 1730 and d. 22 Feb 1791, age 61. Both are bur. at Lanark Cemetery (St. Kentigern's Churchyard).

    4. William Prentice, chr. 1 Dec 1745, Carstairs. He married Katherine Watson. The only child shown in Glasgow christening records is:

    He married Grizzell/Grace Alexander on 8 Jun 1788, Carstairs. She was chr. 16 Oct 1767, Carstairs. Their children were born at Stobilee/Stobbe (near Carstairs) except for John who was born at Ryeflat (near Carstairs).

    6. William Prentice, chr. 8 Nov 1791. By E-mail of 3 Apr 2000, Ross Peters indicates that he m. Janet Easton Merriless who was b. 24 Oct 1805 at Renfrew, Glasgow. Children:

    1. Margaret Prentice, b. 20 Apr 1828, Renfrew. She m. Gilbert King in Glasgow. The emigrated to Australia c. 1858. Gilbert died in 1864 in Melbourne. Margaret then m., 2nd, Clement Johnstone in 1869 in Melbourne. Children:
      1. David
      2. John

    7. Robert Prentice, chr. 19 Jun 1793 and born at Stobilee/Stobbe (near Carstairs). Subject to further investigation for confirmation, he is likely the Robert Prentice shown in the 1851 Scotland census as b. c. 1794 in Carstairs, Lanarkshire, with his wife and family.

    He m. Unknown who was likely b. c. 1795-1797 and d. before 1841. Their known children, per census records:

    He m. Jane Frood who was b. c. 1809, Carmichael, Lanark (per 1851 census) and d. 1891 at the age of 82. Both are buried in the Carmichael Churchyard. Children:

    1. Hugh Prentice, b. c. 1845-1846, Carstairs (or Lesmahagow per 1851 census), and d. 1886, age 40, and bur. in the Carmichael Churchyard.

    He m. Jessie Gold, b. c. 1814 and d. 15 Oct 1901, age 87. Son:

    1. Thomas Prentice Jr., b. c. 1829 and d. 22 Oct 1874, age 45. He m. Catherine Wilson, b. c. 1835 and d. 26 Jan 1870, age 35. Children, not buried in Carmichael Churchyard.

    11. Alexander Prentice, chr. 27 Oct 1812. Subject to further investigation for confirmation, he is likely the Alexander Prentice shown in the 1851 Carluke, Scotland census as b. c. 1812 in Carstairs, Lanarkshire, with his wife and family.

    Most of Thomas's brothers and sisters emigrated to Canada to settle in Whitby Twp., Ontario Co., Ontaio. After James died, Margaret (Stark) emigraterd to join some of her chidlren.

    Also buried in the Carmichael Churchyard are the following persons whose relationship, if any, to William Prentice is not known:

    • James Prentice, d. 21 May 1916, Salesman, Rigside. He m. Janet Harkness, d. 2 Feb 1911, wife of James, above. 1 or more children, including:
      • Thomas Prentice, b 8 Apr 1874, Douglas, Lanark (per IGI)
      • Elizabeth Prentice, d. 29 Apr 1914. She m. William Downie.
