James Prentice of Stonington, CT and Eunice Kibbe
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 1998 and Revised 12 Dec 2008
Update of 12 Dec 2008: James Prentice can be found as a descendant of Thomas Prentice in his eBook. That eBook material now replaces this article.
In our PRENTICE book, we identify Eunice Kibbe's husband as James Prentice, son of Samuel Prentice of Stonington, CT (170/7). There is, however, some difficulty with that identification. The Barbour Index contains the following entry from Stonington, CT records:There are no entries for the marriage of a James Prentice after 1710 until the following Enfield entry:
"Prentice, James, son of Samuel, b. 28 Sep 1710."
James of Stonington would have been 27 in 1737, a suitable age for marriage. Logic suggests this is the same James, son of Samuel because there were no other unmarried men named James Prentice known to be in CT in that time frame
"Prentice, James, res. in Enfield, m. Eunice Kibbe, of Enfield, 13 May 1737."
Unfortunately, Binney's 1883 book does not list any son named "James" for Samuel of Stonington. However, Binney says Samuel has a son, Jonas, b. 28 Sep 1710 which, one will note, is the identical date given by the Barbour Index for James' birth. Unhappily, the Barber Index does not give a date for Jonas' birth so we don't know where Binney obtained that date. That Jonas m. Lucy Denison on 29 Nov 1733.
As a tentative, working hypothesis, Jonas and James are shown as twin brothers, both sons of Samuel of Stonington.
