    A Black Prentice Family

    Introduction: In reviewing the 1870 census for Jessamine Co., KY, we noted the family of George Wheeler and his wife, Mandy (b. c. 1848, KY, and called "Mulatto" although bother George, and their son, George Jr., were called "Black"). Mandy is almost certainly the Amanda Prentice shown in Ancestry.com . Here is that family:

    1. George Prentice was b. c. 1816 in KY.

    The name of his wife is not known. Known children per Ancestry.com , all of whom are identified as "Black" in the 1870 census except for Amanda who by then is married to John Wheeler and called "Mulatto"

    2. Amanda Prentice, b. c. 1848, KY, and d. 30 Sep 1941, Jessamine Co., KY. Called "Black" in the 1880 and 1900 census in Lee, Jessamine Co., KY. 1910 census in Wilmore, Jessamine Co., KY, called "Mulatto."

    She m. John Wheeler, b. c. 1844, KY, and d. 20 Mar 1918, Jessamine, KY, son of Letcher Wheeler and Winnie Young. 1880 and 1900 census in Lee, Jessamine Co., KY.

    Children of Amanda and John per Ancestry.com and called "Black" in census records through1900:
