    To that information we have added the information contained in our earlier Fall 2006 article about William J. Prentice of Cairnyan, Scotland and Hartford, CT .


    1. Thomas Prentice was b. c. 1809 at a presently unknown location in Northern Ireland and d. 27 Sep 1879 in Drumcree, Northern Ireland, at the age of 70 years. Drumcree lies about 100 miles SSW of Belfast and perhaps about 50 miles NW of Dublin.

    From the birth location of his sons, Adam and Seth, we know that he and his family in 1857 and 1859 were likely living in Portadown, Northern Ireland, which lies approximately 25 miles SW of Belfast

    He m. Ruth Jones. She was b. c. 1826 in Derrycarne, Northern Ireland, and d. 14 Sep 1873 at the age of only about 47 years. Their known children are per Ancestry.com :

    2. William J Prentice, b. 1849 at a presently unknown location in Northern Ireland, and d. 1930 in Hartford, CT, USA. He likely would have been living with his family in Portadown in 1857 and 1859. In 1907 he lived on Manchester St., Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. In the 1920 Hartford census he is a widower living with his son, John, and his wife. In the 1930 Hartford census he was then 75 years of age, living with his daughter, Elizabeth, and her family, and apparently died there later that same year.

    He m. Agnes Newman. She was b. 1858 in Ayrshire, Scotland and d. 1917 in Hartford, CT. in 1907 had been living in Cairnyan, Scotland. Agnes first appears in Ellis Island Records aboard the "Columbia" which had departed from Glasgow, Scotland and arrived in New York on 5 Feb 1907. Her declared intention was to join her husband in Hartford, CT. Agnes was described in immigration records as 5' 5", pale complexion, fair hair, and blue eyes.Children:

    1. Barbara Elinor Prentice. She m. Leonard McCarvill. She is not shown as accompanying her mother to the US in 1907 and may have remained, and married, in Northern Ireland. Or, she may have accompanied her father who had preceeded his wife in coming to the USA.

    2. Thomas Prentice. He accompanied his mother, Agnes, to the US in 1907. He m. Mary. It is unclear whether he is the Thomas Prentice shown in the 1920 Hartford, CT, census as b. c. 1889, Scotland, as unmarried.

    3. Elizabeth "Bess" Prentice, b. c. 1896, Cairnvan, Scotland. She accompanied her mother, Agnes, to the US in 1907. She m. Fred Crickmore. She is probably the Elizabeth Crickmore who appears in the 1920 census in S. Windsor, Hartford Co., CT, as b. c. 1896, Scotland, with her husband, James F. (Fred?) Crickmore, b. c. 1891, England. In the 1930 census in Hartford. Neither are shown in the SSDI. Children shown in 1930 census:
      1. Ruth E. Crickmore, b. c. 1925. At home in Hartford in 1930.

    4. Anna Prentice. She m. Thomas Richmond. Children:

    5. Agnes Prentice, b. c. 1891, Cairnyan, Scotland. She accompanied her mother, Agnes, to the US in 1907. She m. George Booth. Children:

      3. Dorothy Booth. She m. George Kobe who d. 1995, FL.

    6. John Newman Prentice, b. 29 Jun 1881 in Killmarnack, Scotland , and d. 1948, New York, USA. John did not appear with his mother, Agnes, in her 1907 emigration record and had likely emigrated earlier and was living with his father in Hartford, CT, in 1907. He appears in the 1920 Hartford census living with his wife and his father. He m. Marion Stuart McDougal on 5 Nov 1919, Hartford, CT, USA. She was b. 1887 in Greenack, Scotland, and d. 1975, New York, USA. Children:
      1. (son) Prentice.
      2. Margaret Prentice, b. c. 1921, CT. She is likely the Margaret M. Prentice shown in the 1930 census in Hartford, Hartford Co., CT as b. c. 1921, dau. of John N. Prentice and Marion M. Prentice. She m. Donald Lee Randolph. He was b. 25 Feb 1915 and d. 31 Oct 1970. Son:
        1. (son) Randolph, b. c. 1940-1945.

      4. Shirley Elizabeth Prentice, b. 5 Oct 1928, CT and d. 5 Jan 1997, Staten Island, Richmond Co., NY, USA. At home in the 1930 Hartford census. She m. Mr. Buraus. Children:

    7. William Johnston Prentice, b. 19 Sep 1890 in Scotland and d. 21 Apr 1965, Middletown, CT. He accompanied his mother, Agnes, to the US in 1907.He m. Helen Ramage. She was b. 1888 (with her parents b. in Scotland) and d. 1962, Hartford, CT. William and Helen appear in the 1920 Hartford, CT, census. Not in 1930 census. Son:
      1. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1918, CT. At home in Hartford in the 1920 census.

    3. David Alexander Prentice, b. 1851 and d. 2 Dec 1933 in Portadown, Northern Ireland.

    He m. Margaret Gilmore. She was b. 1851 and d. 20 Dec 1944 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Children:

Dec 1974 in Worcester, MA, USA. It is unclear whether he is the James Prentice shown as b. c. 1895, Ireland, age 35, unmarried, and a Lodger in the 1930 census in Worcester, MA.

    4. Adam Prentice, b. 7 Apr 1857 in Portadown, Northern Ireland, and d. 6 Oct 1925 in Glastonbury, CT, USA. Portadown lies approximately 25 miles SW of Belfast. He emigrated to the United States in 1885 and was naturalized in 1890.Adam appears in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census in Glastonbury, Hartford Co., CT, USA, with his 2nd wife, Mary, and their children.

    He m. 1st Margaret Nicholson on 5 Nov 1878, Portadown, Northern Ireland. Nothing further is presently known about her.

    He m. 2nd Mary Jane Symington on 3 Apr 1886, South Manchester, CT. She was b. 17 Jul 1859 in Derrylard, Northern Ireland as were her parents. She was the dau. of George Symington and Anne Jane Gatews.

Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 26 Nov 1913 and d. 14 Dec 1987 in Manchester, Hartford Co., CT. Called a step-son in the 1930 census. He m. and had 1 or more children, including:
