    We are working with Dorothy Cooper in Australia in tracing her Prentice line. Here is what we have so far:

    1. John Prentice may have been b. c. 1702, Cair, Carluke, Scotland (per Amanda, email, 14 Aug 2005). His father might be James Prentice who is mentioned at the top of our Winter 2004 article entitled John Prentice of Carluke, Scotland .

    He m. Marion Hastie on 19 Jun 1726, Gair. She was b. c. 1704, Carluke and d. 9 Mar 1751, Carluke. and they had 1 or more children, including (per IGI):

    1. Jean Prentice, b. 11 Apr 1726, Carluke.
    2. Thomas Prentice, b. 7 Jun 1728, Carluke. He m. Janet Girdwood. They had 1 or more children, including:
      1. (probably) George Prentice, b. c. 1754, Carnwath. For George, his wife and descendants, see our Fall 2006 article entitled George Prentice of Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland . He is #1(ii)(1).
    3. Marrion Prentice, b. 1728, Carluke. She may, or may not, be the Marion Prentice who m. James Inglis on 29 Jul 1750 in Carluke.
    4. Antonia Prentice, b. 6 Feb 1730, Carluke.
    5. James Prentice, b. 1732, Carluke. He may, or may not, be the James Prentice who. m. Janet Morton on 25 Jan 1755 in Carluke. They had 1 or children, including James Prentice, chr. 1768, Carluke,
    6. John Prentice, b. 1734, Carluke. He may, or may not, be either the John Prentice who. m. Margaret Russel on 31 May 1755 in Carluke or the John Prentice who m. Janet Elder on 20 Aug 1756 in Carluke.

    40. David Prentice, chr. 31 Jul 1779, Cambusnethan. He may be the David Prentice who m. Janet Lightbody on 13 Jul 1800 at Dalziel which lies just below Motherwell, about 5 miles southeast of Old Monkland. It lies only a mile or two from Cambusnethan.

    50. James Weir b. 1770, Shotts. James was a vitner and innkeeper of the Shotts Inn. Betty Cleland.

    60. Alexander Prentice, chr. 6 Dec 1807, Dalziel (now Motherwell), Lanarkshire, Scotland. He appears in the 1851 census living at 80 Townhead St., Hamilton, Lanarkshire, with his wife and family where he was a "Carter and Grocer." In the 1871 Hamilton census he was living at 78 Townhead Street and was a "Grocer and Spiurit Retailer."

    6. William Prentice, b. c. 1850, Hamilton. At home there in 1851 and apparently d. before 1853 as a later son has the same name.
    7. William Prentice, b. c. 1853, Hamilton. At home there in 1861 and 1871. In the 1891 census he is unmarried and living with the family of his brother, David, #1a and #2, below. Occupation: Draper. He may be the William F. Prentice shown in the 1901 census in Paisley, Renfrewshire, as a Draper, unmarried, living at Camnethan, Arkleston Rd., with John B. Main and Jeannie Love.
    8. John Prentice, b. c. 1856, Hamilton. At home there in 1861 and 1871. He may be the John Prentice appearing in the 1891 census in Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire, as b. c. 1855, Hamilton, an unmarried Boarder, occupation: Carter. He later appears in the 1901 census in Hamilton as an unmarried Boarder and Carter.

    70. David Prentice, b. c. 1841 Hamilton, Lanarkshire. At home there in 1851 and 1871.

    He m. Christina Gilchrist. They appear in the 1881 and 1901 Greenock West census. Children:

    1. Helen/Ellen Joanna Prentice, b. 8 Jan 1867 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew. At home in 1881. 1891 census living with her brother, Alexander, below.
    2. Alexander Prentice, b. 4 Jun 1868, Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew. At home in 1881. 1891 census an unmarried servant in Cathcart, Renfrewshire. 1901 census a General Practitioner Registered in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, living with his sister, Helen, above.
