    Fall 2008 and Revised 1 Jul 2008

    1. John Tabor Prentice is the son of Golden Prentice and Anne Tabor and appears in our Fall 1999 article about The Prentices of the Colnes, Essex Co., England . He emigrated to Sutton, Brome, Quebec, Canada and we are seeking information about his descendants.

    1. John Tabor Prentice, b. 16 Apr 1799, Bocking Independent. He emigrated to Canada in 1829 and became a farmer in Sutton, Missisquo, Canada.

He m. Mary c. 1824-16 per IGI. - emigrated in 1829. He is probably the John Tabor shown in the IGI who m. Mary c. 1824-26.

The 1881 Sutton, Brome, Quebec census shows John, as a farmer and member of Church of England, with his (2nd?) wife, Abigail, b. c. 1813, Quebec. Known children:

    1. Charles Prentice, chr. 26 Nov 1826, Bocking.
    2. Henry Prentice, chr. 1823, Bocking.
    3. (probably) Philena Prentice. She is probably the person shown in the 1881 household as Philena Death, b. c. 1828, Quebec, Methodist, wife of John S. Death, b. c. 1834, Quebec, Farmer, Methodist, and probably the son of Catherine S. Death, b. c. 1813, Quebec, Methodist, who appears in the household in the 1881 census. Children shown in the 1881 census:
      1. Mary L. Death, b. c. 1861, Quebec, Methodist.
      2. Henry D. Death, b. c. 1864, Quebec, Methodist.
      3. James S. Death, b. c. 1867, Quebec, Methodist.
      4. Emma L. Death, b. c. 1873, Quebec, Methodist.

    4. John Tabor Prentice Jr., b. c. 1840, Quebec, Farmer, Church of England. He was apparently unmarried and living with his parents in 1881.
    5. Geo H. Prentice, b. c. 1851, Quebec, Farmer, Church of England. He was apparently unmarried and living with his parents in 1881.

The 1901 census in Sutton, Brome, Quebec, shows the following family which are in some mannor related to the foregoing persons although the designations ("mother," "head" and "brother") are somewhat confusing:

    • Prentice Mary, Female, Head, married, b. Nov 3 1868. Perhaps she would be more correctly married to one of Abigail's sons and Abigail's daughter in Law
    • Prentice Anna, Female, Daughter, single, b. Feb 7 1883. Probably Mary's daughter.
    • Prentice Willie, Male, Son, single, b. Jun 20 1888 Probably Mary's son.
    • Prentice Carl, Male, Son, single, b. Feb 11 1892 Probably Mary's son.
    • Prentice Abigail, Female, Mother, widowed, b. Oct 1 1812. She is probably the (2nd?) wife of Golden Prentice, above and perhaps it would be better to call her Mary's Mother in Law..
    • Prentice John, Male, Brother, single, b. Sep 4 1844. He might be the John Tabor Prentice Jr., above. b. c. 1840.
