    1. Archibald Prentice was b. c. 1801, South Leith, Edinburgh, per the 1851 census. He was then living at Vinegas (Vinegar?) Close 3, Leith South, MidlothianMidlothian, Scotland, per Ancestry.com .

    In 1851 he was a Cooper. In the earlier 1841 census he was a Cooper Journeyman also living on Vinegar Close.

    The name of his wife is presently Unknown and was apparently deceased after the 1827 birth of her son, Adam, before the 1841 and 1851 census as she is not shown in either census record.. They had 1 or more children, including:

    1. Adam Prentice was b. Nov 1822 in Leith, Sutherlandshire. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]

    2. Adam Prentice was b. Nov 1822 in Leith, Sutherlandshire, and deceased by 1871 and 1881 census. He appears in the 1851 census in Leith South, Midlothian, Scotland, living at 2 Lawrie St. with his wife and family. He was a Journeyman Cooper. In the 1861 census his surname is spelled "Prentiss" and he is living at 16 Mitchell St. in South Leith, Midlothian where his occupation is that of a Cooper. He is not in the 1841 census, nor does he appear in the IGI.

    He m. Isabella (Anderson?). She was b. c. 1823 in Cramond, Edinburgh, Midlothian. She appears as a widow and head of the family in the 1871 and 1881 census in South Leith. Known children (for convenience, we use the more common spelling of "Prentice":

    1. Elizabeth Prentice, b. 17 Mar 1848, Edinburgh, Midlothian. At home in Leith South in 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census. 1901 lived at 174 Albert St., Leith, Midlothian with her sister, Catherine.

    2. Mary Prentice, b. 1st Q. 1850, South Leith, Midlothian. At home in Leith South in 1851 and 1861 census. 1871 at 26 Drummond Place, Edinburgh, Midlothian as a servant.

    3. Catherine Prentice, b. c. 1852, Leith. At home in 1871 and 1881 census. 1901 lived at 174 Albert St., Leith, Midlothian with her sister, Elizabeth.

    4. John Prentice, b. c. 1853, Leith, and d. 3rd Q. Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland. At home in South Leith in 1861 and 1871 census. Not in 1881 census. He m. Elizaqbeth Harcase McKay. She was b. 4th Q. 1959, Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, and d. 1st Q. 1943, Sunderland, Durham. Children per Ancestry.com :

      3. Thomas A Prentice 1883 –

      9. Adam Prentice, b. 2nd Q. 1897, Sunderland, Durham, and d. 4 Oct 1954, Ancoats Hosp., Manchester, Lancashire. He m. Catherine Mary Pitts in Jul 1923, Manchester. She was b. 28 Jul 1897, Openshaw, Manchester, and d. 17 Apr 1989, Stockport, Cheshire. Children per Ancestry.com:
        1. (son) Prentice. He m. Miss Smith and had 3 sons and a daughter
          1. (son) Prentice. He m. Chin and had 2 sons and 1 daughter.
          2. (son) Prentice.
          3. (dau.) Prentice. She m. Mr. Lynch and had 4 sons.
          4. (son) Prentice.
        2. John William Prentice, b. 17 Feb 1924, 18 Ryder St., Bedford, Manchester, and d. 16 Sep 1999, Manchester, Lancashire. Bur. Gorton Cem., Manchester. He m. Alma Thurgoland in Oct 1944, Manchester. She was b. 3rd Q. 1925, Salford, Lancashire, and d. 28 Feb 2007, Manchester. They had 3 children:
          1. (son) Prentice. He m. Miss Snape and had a daughter.
          2. (son) Prentice. He m. Miss McGowan and had a son.
          3. (dau.) Prentice. She m. Mr. Higham and had a daughterr.
      10. Mary Ann S. Prentice, b. 1st Q., 1898, Jarrow, Durham.

    5. Isabella Prentice, b. c. 1856, Leith. At home in South Leith in 1861 census. She may be the Isabel Prentice shown in the 1881 census in Old Kilpatrick, Dumbarton, working as a "Nurse Dom Serv".

    6. Adam Prentice, b. c. 1858, Leith. At home in 1861. Not in 1881 or 1891 census.

    Living with Adam's family in 1851 was a sister-in-law, Betsy Anderson, b. c. 1820, Cramond, Midlothian.
