    Introduction: The information in this article originally appeared in C. J. F. Binney's 1883 PRENTICE book. It has now been augmented with records from census records and email correspondence from Grace (Prentice) MacDougall. Here is what we have so far:

    1. Capt. Thomas Prentice of Suffolk Co., England was born c. 1758, England, and died 21 Jan 1831 in Providence, RI.

    Thomas Prentice was pressed into the naval service in England. At some point, he escaped from a vessel bound to America and eventually settled in Providence, RI. Eventually Thomas became the Captain of a merchant vessel sailing from Providence to the West Indies.

    By email of 29 Jun 2000, Grace (Prentice) MacDougall relates that Capt. Thomas Prentice purchased land in Worcester where Holy Cross is located all the way to Rt. 9 where the Worcester Medical Center is located. That was the Worcester State Hospital prior to it's being torn down.

    He m. Elizabeth Field on 26 Jun 1788, but we do not yet know know how long it was after arriving in Providence. She was b. c. 1770, Providence, and d. 1 Jun 1846, outliving her husband, Thomas, by 15 years. She was the dau. of James Field and Sarah Birkett.     2. William K. Prentice, b. c. 1829 & d. 5 Mar 1858. He appears in 1850 Atlantic City, Monmouth, NH census, single, teamster. It is not known whether he m. and had children between 1850 and his death in 1858.

    3. George Whitney. Prentice, b, 1831 & d. 8 May 1914. He may be the George W. Prentice who m. Maria Louisa Fisher (b. 1835 & d. 12 Sep 1890) in Providence on 22 Sep 1853. They are shown in the 1880 census with no children. He may also be the George W. Prentice shown in the 1900 Providence census with his wife, Emma F. Rounds who d. 9 Oct 1933.

    4. Thomas W. Prentice. He might be the Thomas W. Prentice, b. Apr 1841 who m. Amanda M. Bennett (b. Feb 1851, MA) in Providence on 27 Nov 1860. In the 1870 and 1880 Providence census he appears with his wife, Amanda (called Maria in the 1870 census, perhaps Amanda’s middle name). Not in 1900 census. Son (per 1870 census; none shown in 1880 census):

      1. George Graham Prentice, b. 21 Sep 1861 & d. 6 Jul 1876, RI, at the age of 15 years and 10 months..

    5. Frank Prentice, b. 1838 & d. 2 Mar 1899, RI, at the age of about 61 years. In the 1860 census he unmarried and living with his parents. In the 1880 Providence census he is living in the home of Henry T. and Margaret S. Fidler and is called an “uncle.”

Not in 1930 census. His wife's obituary relates that Harrison and his wife owned and operated H. H. Prentice Excavating Company in Paxton for 40 years.

    He m. Rachel May Parker. She was b. 17 Jan 1922, Worcester, Worcester Co., MA, and d. 13 Aug 2007, Paxton, Worcester Co., MA. An Ancestor Chart for her can be found at Ancestry.com . Her obituary of 20 Aug 2007 in TheTelegram News reads as follows:

      Rachel M. (Parker) Prentice, 85. She was b. c. 1922 and d. 13 Aug 2007.

      PAXTON— Rachel M. (Parker) Prentice, 85, of Paxton, died peacefully in her home on Monday, August 13, 2007.

      Her husband of 60 years, Harrison "Hassie" Prentice, died on May 30th of this year. She leaves a sister, Miriam P. Fulford of Palestine, Texas; nephews and nieces including Donald, Richard and Kay Fulford all of Texas, Susan Murch of West Virginia, Donna Johnson of Maine, Marilou Barratt of Maryland, and Gail A. Belanger of Holden; several grandnephews and nieces; several great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; and many cousins. She was born in Worcester the daughter of Lucius W. and Alice M. (Briggs) Parker and lived most of her life in Paxton.

      Mrs. Prentice, along with her husband, owned and operated H.H. Prentice Excavating Company in Paxton for 40 years. Previously, she worked for Norton Company and the U.S. Army Research and Development Command in Natick. She graduated from Commerce High School and Becker College both in Worcester. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Paxton and the Paxton Woman's Club where she held several offices. She was a gifted artist, enjoyed oil painting, was a skilled knitter known for her Irish Knit Afghans.

      A memorial service for Mrs. Prentice will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 25th, in the First Congregational Church, 1 Church St., Paxton. Burial will be private in Mooreland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104-2396; or the First Congregational Church of Paxton, 1 Church St., Paxton, MA 01612. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden is directing arrangements.

    Harrison and Rachel apparently did not have children as none are mentioned in her obituary.

    He m. Mary Bogman (Bagman?) of Providence, RI on 14 Nov 1831. She was b. c. 1810, Providence, RI. There in 1882. In 1880 Cranston, Providence Co., RI census living next door to their daughter, Cornelia, and her husband, James Field. Children (per Binney and 1850 census):

    1. Daniel Prentice. Probably deceased by 1840 since a later child has this name also.

    8.1 William Alfred "Al" Prentice, b. Dec 1862, MA, Machinist Apprentice. He appears in the 1880 census in Worcester, Worcester Co., MA as b. c. 1861. He appears in the 1900 Worcester, MA census with his wife and family.

    He appears in the 1910 Worcester, MA census with his family where he is incorrectly indexed as "Wilfred Prentice." He appears in the 1920 census as "William Prentice" and later in the 1930 census indexed as "W. Alfred Prentice."

    He m. Ella J. Doyle, b. c. 1865, MA, dau. of Eliza Doyle J., b. Jun 1837, Ireland (as were both of her parents) who was living with them in Worster in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census. Known children per census records:

    1. William H. Prentice, b. 19 Jun 1883, Worcester, MA and d. c. Oct 13, 1962 at 126 Dunmoreland St., Springfield, MA (per obituary and SSDI). At home in Worcester in the 1900 and 1910 census.       1. Chester H. Prentice of Westport, CT was b. 10 Sep 1921, Wocester, MA, and d. 27 Jun 2008. He m. Jewell Gregory. They had 4 children (per Grace MacDougall, email, 15 Jan 2007). His Obituary in the Citizen-Times reads as follows:

          Black Mountain - Chester Harold Prentice, 85, of Highland Farms Community, died Friday, June 27, 2008.

          He was born September 10, 1921, in Worcester, Mass. to the late William Harold and Edna Dimmick Prentice. He attended Classical High School in Worcester Mass., Whorton College in Pennsylvania, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, and obtained a master's degree in business administration from Harvard University. Chet was a veter an of World War II in the European Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his service to his country. He was called to serve again in the Korean War.

          After moving to Black Mountain, he founded and was CEO of Highland Farms Retirement Center from 1968 to his retirement in 1994.

          Chet is survived by his wife, Jewell Gregory Prentice; a daughters, Gail Roberts, of Asheville, Patricia Anderson and her husband, Peter, of Derry, N.H., Carol Milner and husband, Rex, of Dahlonega, Ga.; a son, Steven Prentice and his wife, Deborah of Norwell, Mass.; stepson, Brian Price, and wife, Robbie, of Black Mountain; stepdaughter, Teonna Price, of Peachtree City Ga.; and stepson, Chad Price, of Black Mountain.

          A private family service will be held at the Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Care Partners P.O. Box 5779 Asheville, NC 28813.

He d. before 1930 as Edith is then shown as a widow, age 44, in the 1930 census. Children (per Grace MacDougall, email, 15 Jan 2007):

    9. Howard M. Webster, b. 28 Apr 1858, Providence, RI, and d. before 1930. He was the son of Levi L. Webster (b. 1833) and Josephine M. Prentice (b. 1833).     He m. Cora B. Davenport. on 18 Dec 1883, Providence, RI. She was b. 17 Jun 1861, Providence, RI. For her roots, see Appendix A. In the 1930 Providence census she is a widow living with her daughter Ethel, and her husband. Children:

Graves who he m. on 8 Oct 1919 in Providence. She was b. Oct 1894, Providence, RI, dau. of John Graves (b. c. 1867, England) and Annie L. (b. c. 1866, England) who appear in the 1900 census in Providence. Raymond and Elsie appear in the 1930 Cranston census with their children:

His obituary of 7 Sep 1991 in the Telegram & Gazette, Worcester, MA, seems to indicate that he had no children since none are mentioned (and confirmed by Grace Prentice MacDougall;'s email of 15 Jan 2007) and provides the following information:

      Obituary: ASHBURNHAM - Albert W. Prentice, 87 (b. c. 1904), of 55 Center St., South Ashburnham, died Thursday in Gardner Manor Nursing Home, Gardner, after a brief illness. He leaves his wife of 46 years, Alyce J. (Cychol) Prentice; and several nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of William A. and Ella (Doyle) Prentice, and lived 46 years in South Ashburnham. Mr. Prentice was a toolmaker for many years at Fitchburg Paper Co., retiring in 1963. He previously worked for 23 years at the former Florence Oil Stove Co. in Gardner.

      Mr. Prentice was a member of Gardner Post 905, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Worcester Lodge 56 of Odd Fellows. He graduated from Boys' Trade High School in Worcester. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the Seabees in the Asian-Pacific theater. No funeral services are planned. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Gardner. Calling hours are 10-10:45 a.m. today at Poliks Funeral Home, 431 Pleasant St., Gardner.

    Who are Thomas Prentice's Parents?

    The identity of his parents has not yet been determined. The only Thomas Prentice shown in the IGI as born in Suffolk in that time frame is Thomas Prentice, b. 17 Dec 1763 and chr. 23 Mar 1764 at The Old Meeting House, Saint Nicholas Street-Presby., Ipswich, Suffolk, England. The IGI identifies the parents of that Thomas Prentice as John and Mary Prentice.

    There may, of course, have other men named Thomas Prentice born in England in that time frame, so further investigation is needed.
