    Update of 3 Jun 2011: With his 1801 Combs, Suffolk birth, Israel might be a son of James Prentice in our Summer 2005 article entitled James Prentice of Battisford, Suffolk .

    1. Israel Prentice, was b. c. 1801,Combs, Suffolk, England, and d. in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1876, Ipswich, Suffolk, age 76.

    Combs, Suffolk lies only about 2 miles SW of Stowmarket, and about 4 miles NW of Needham Market, where there were a number of Prentice families and might be related to them.

    Israel appears in the 1841 census at St.Mary at the Quay, Suffolk, with his wife and family. He appears in the 1851 census in Ipswich St. Margaret, Suffolk as Iszall Prentice. In the 1861 census in Ipswich St. Clement he is called Isaac Prentice. In the 1871 census in Ipswich St. Matthew he is again called Israel Prentice.

    He appears in the 1875 Suffolk Post Office Directory under the listing "Friuterers and Greengrocers" at 5 High St., Ipswich.

    He m. Frances Ungless on 16 Jan 1827 in Buxhall, Suffolk. She was b. c. 1800, Morley, London (per IGI and 1851 census) and was the dau. of Henry and Lucy Ungless. Children per 1841 and later census:

    1. Caroline Prentice. b. c. 1828, Ipswich, Suffolk. At home in 1851.
    2. Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1830, Ipswich, Suffolk. Not home in 1851.
    3. Frances Prentice, b. c. abt 1833. At home as Frederick Prentice in 1851 census.

    5. John Prentice, b. c. 1837, Ipswich, Suffolk. In the 1851 census in Mildenhall he is living with Henry and Lucy Ungless and is called a nephew. Not in 1861 and later census.

    Israel Prentice later appears in the 1871 census in Ipswich St. Matthew, Suffolk with his daughter, Caroline, and grandson, Frederick Prentice, b. c. 1867, Eye, Suffolk.

    2. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1835, Ipswich, Suffolk. At home in 1851. He appears in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census in Ipswich St. Matthew with his wife, Emma, b. c. 1838, Bradfield, Essex. Emma d. before the 1891 census in Ipswich, Suffolk, where Thomas appears as a widower. He does not appear in the 1901 census. He may, or may not, be the Thomas Prentice who appears in the 1875 Suffolk Post Office Directory as "Corn, coal, oil cake, etc, merchant, Neptune Quay." Son:

    1. Charles Prentice, b. c. 1860, Norwich, Norfolk, England. He may be deceased by 1871 as he does not appear at home.

    3. Henry Prentice, b. c. 1842, Ipswich, Suffolk. At home in 1851 and 1861. He appears in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census in Ipswich St. Matthew, Suffolk, with his wife, Sarah A., b. c. 1841, Ipswich, Cheshire (sic) England. Children:

    1. Bertha Frances Prentice, b. c. 1868, Ipswich, Cheshire (sic). At home in 1881 and 1901.
