    1. Frederick William Prentiss was b. Mar 1839 in OH, as were both of his parents. He appears in the 1900 census in Columbus, Franklin Co., OH with his wife.

    He m. Belle H., b. Jun 1852 in NJ. He may be deceased by 1920 as she is shown living alone. Son shown in 1900 census:

    1. Stanton Prentiss, b. Sep 1879, OH. . . . . . . . [2]

    Curiously, Frederick seems not to appear in any prior census in Ohio.

    2. Stanton Prentiss, b. Sep 1879, OH. Although further investigation is needed for confirmation, but given the Columbus, OH location, and the name of a son (Frederick William Prentiss II), it seems likely that he is the same person as the Stanton Greene Prentiss posted by Arla Jean Cruzen at Ancestry.com but without any date or place of birth.

    Stanton Greene Prentiss is shown as m. Virginia Marion/Merion Knox. No marriage date is given, but it may have been c. 1900-1910. Children of Stanton Greene Prentiss and Virginia Knox are:

    1. Frederick William Prentiss II. He may, or may not, be the Frederick Prentiss shown in the SSDI as b. 12 Aug 1906, who obtained his SS# in OH and who d. Oct 1984 in Titusville, Brevard Co., FL.
    2. Margaret Prentiss

    Who are Frederick William Prentiss' Parents?

    The 1900 census shows that both of Frederick Prentiss' parents were b. in OH.

    The name, "Stanton" suggests the possibility that he is descended from Thomas "The Trooper" Prentice where the Stanton name is found in multiple generations, and some of his descendants lived in Columbus, OH. However, so far we have not been able to identify Frederick's parents.

    Since Frederick was b. Mar 1839 in OH, we checked the 1840 OH census where only the heads of families are listed. We did not find any with the "Prentiss" spelling, but we did find the following Prentice families:

    1. Daniel Prentice Harpersfield, Ashtabula, Ohio
    2. David Prentice Newberry, Miami, Ohio
    3. Irena Prentice Harpersfield, Ashtabula, Ohio
    4. J P Prentice Harris, Medina, Ohio
    5. John Prentice Oregon, Lucas, Ohio
    6. Lucius Prentice Independence, Cuyahoga, Ohio

    No Fred/Frederick appears in the 1850 census. No Fred/Frederick b. c. 1839 appears in the 1860, 1870 or 1880 OH census.
