    Chippewa Prentices of Red Lake Indian Reservation, Beltrami, MN

    A review of Census Records shows the following members of the Chippewa Indian Tribe at the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Beltrami Co., MN:

    1900 Census

    1. Charles Prentice is a member of the Chippewa Indian Tribe. He was b. Aug 1866 in MN and appears in the 1900 census on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Beltrami Co, MN, with his wife, Julia, b. Dec 1870, MN. He does not appear in earlier census records. Charles later appears in the 1910 Beltrami Co. census with a wife, Nagahmon(?), b. c. 1866. Son of Charles and Lydia, per 1900 and 1910 census:

    1. Ludger Prentice, son, b. Mar 1899, MN

    Charles later appears in the 1930 census with a wife, Jannie (Jane?), b. c. 1874, and a grandson, , b. c. 1924, MN.

    2. Edward Prentice, b. Jul 1869, Red Lake, MN. He m. Mary, b. Dec 1874. He is likely the same person as the Edward Prentice who appears in the later 1910 census as b. c. 1870, MN, with his wife called Lizzie, b. c. 1874, Redby, Beltrami, MN. Children (per 1900, 1910 census and Ancestry.com :

    1. George Prentice, b. Feb 1894, MN (per 1900 census)
    2. Catherine Katie Isabella Prentice, b. Feb 1899, Redby, Beltrami, MN (per 1900 and 1910 census and Ancestry.com, above). 1920 census in Redlake, Beltrami, MN. She m. Xavier Downwind, b. 24 Dec 1893, Red Lake, and d. there 24 Jul 1968. He was the son of Me-Zhuck-Fence James Downwind and Bay Gum Ah Sheak.
    3. John Prentice, b. c. 1901, MN (per 1910 census)
    4. Rosie Prentice, b. c. 1908, MN (per 1910 census)
    5. Florence Prentice, b. c. 1909, Red Lake, MN (per 1910 census)

    Mary/Lizzie Prentice appears in the 1920 and 1930 Beltrami census without her husband but with the following children shown:

    1. John Prentice, b. c. 1902, MN. Not home in 1930 census.
    2. Florence Prentice, b. c. 1910, MN. Not home in 1930 census.
    3. Edith Prentice, b. c. 1912, MN. Not home in 1930 census.
    4. Theresa Prentice, b. c. 1914, MN. At home with her mother in the 1930 census.
    5. Catherine Prentice. She m. Xavier Downwind, b. c. 1896, MN. Son:
      1. Paul Downwind, b. c. 1919, MN.

    3. Cecile Prentice, b. Sep 1889, MN

    4. George Prentice, b. Feb 1852, MN. He might be the same person as the George Prentice, b. c. 1848, who appears in the 1920 Beltrami Co., census. He appears with his wife, Josette Prentice, b. May 1850, MN.

    5. Lizette Prentice, b. Aug 1886, MN.

    1910 census:

    6. Frank Shumuhnoss Kemewunebenais Prentice, b. c. 1873, MN, and d. 24 Dec 1914, Red Lake Indian Res., Beltrami Co., MN. He m. Harriet Sqwejagun Lussier, b. c. 1874, MN, per Ancestry.com . Children:

    1. Paul Aloysius Okemahwahjewaib Prentice, b. 19 Jul 1899, and d. 24 Sep 1962, St. Mary's, Redlake. He m. Mary Jane Martin . She was b. 1905, Beaulieu, MN. They had a dau. who m. Mr. Lawrentce and had a daughter.
    2. Charles Prentice, b. c. 1899, MN.
    3. Julia Prentice, b. c. 1907, MN.
    4. Lizzie Prentice, b. c. 1909, MN.

    A Harriet Nelson appears in the 1930 Beltrami Co. census as b. c 1881, MD with her husband, Amos Nelson, b. c. 1892, MN, and daughter, Louisa Prentice,b. c. 1915, MN. There is a chance that Harriet might be a widow of Frank Prentice, above, and that Louisa might be the daugher of Frank and Harriet.

    1920 census:

    7. Paul Prentice, b. c. 1898, MN. He appears in the International Lumber Co. Camp #3, Beltrami Co., MN. He is likely the same person as Paul Prentice, shown in the 1930 Beltrami census as b. c. 1900, MN, with his wife, Mary Jane, b. c. 1906, MN, and children:

    1. Philomena Prentice, b. c. 1923, MN.
    2. Mary Magdeline Prentice, b. c. 1925, MN.
    3. Paul Aloysius(?) Pentice, b. c. 1927.
    4. Gloria Prentice, b. c. 1920, MN.

    Also living with Paul and his family in the 1930 census were 2 brothers in law, Allen and Frank Martin, presumably brothers of his wife, Mary Jane.

    8. William Prentice, b. c. 1882, MN. He m. Mary, b. c. 1892, MN. Daughter:

    1. Susan Prentice, b. c. 1917, MN.
