By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2006 and Revised 23 Nov 2009
Judith Dickson's email of 4 Sep 2006 and Christine Hadden's email of 22 Nov 2009 have provided information about the following family:
1. Archibald Prentice was perhaps b. c. 1850-1855 at an unknown location, probably in, or near,Cambusnethan where he married in 1876.
He m. Mary Stevenson in 1876 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland. At some later date, and before 29 Apr 1884, they emigranted to Queensland, Australia. They had 1 or more children, including:
- John McDougall Dillon Prentice, b. 29 Apr 1884, Queensland, Australia (Ref: 1884/B032404).
Who are Archibald Prentice's Parents? A search of our Scotland Prentice database did not disclose an Archibald Prentice married to a Mary Stevenson or one born in the general 1850-1855 time frame.
We did, however, in the 1881 census find an Archibald Prentice, b. c. 1852 in Levenseate, Edinburghshire, with his wife, Mary, b. c. 1855, Cumnock, Ayrsire. In that 1881 census they were shown living in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, which lies approximately 7-8 miles WNW of Cambusnethan. No children were shown. They do not appear in the 1891 Scotland census which would be consistent with an emigration to Australia by 1884.
Whether they are the correct persons needs further investigation.
