    William Prentice of High Easter: Black Sheep

    Pamela Wainman, by email of 22 Mar 2003, brings to our attention information about William Prentice of High Easter. It reads as follows:

      Session Rolls 1598

      "William PRENTICE of High Easter, labourer [was brought before the Court] for assaulting Hugh Northledge in the highway at the same called Park Lane and robbing him of a hat worth 2/- and 11/-in money; and for breaking into the house of William Serredge at the same in the night-time, The said Serredge and all his household being there, and stealing two flitches of bacon worth 20/- and a pair of knitted stockings worth 3/4d and a hat worth 3/-, a belt worth 4d and a knife worth 4d. "

      Prentice was found guilty and sentenced to hang.

    The first offense would, under English law, be classified as Robbery, a felony. The second offense would be classified as Burglary, a felony.
