By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2004 and Revised 26 Feb 2004
1. Donald Edward Prentiss was b. 30 Oct 1875. There is some confusion about his birth place:
- the 1910 census identifies his birth place as Scotland, as were his parents. He was then living in Milton Pct., Snohomish Co., WA. Living with his family in 1910 was Wesley W. Middleton, step son, b. c. 1902, MI.
- the 1920 census says he was b. Minnesota (with both parents b. in Scotland) and he was then living in Orleans, Ionia Co., MI.
- The 1930 census says he was b. in Vermont and he was living in Alpena, Alpena Co., MI
He d. Dec 1971 in Portage, Kalamazoo, MI. at the age of 96 years (per SSDI).
At the time of his death, he was living with his son, Donald, Jr., at 5204 Regay, Portage, Michigan. Services were held from the Halverson Chapel, Three Rivers, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Pace, First Assembly of God, Kalamazoo, officiating. Interment, at Belding. (Source: Kalamazoo Gazette Sun 12 Dec 1971).
He m. Viola M., b. c. 1871, MI (per 1910 census) and/or Capitola M. b. c. 1871, MI (per 1920 and 1930 census). Children:
- Donald Edward Prentiss Jr., b. c. 1911, Washington. He resided at 5204 Regay St., Portage in 1971. He is probably the Donald E. Prentiss who appears in the SSDI as b. 18 Jun 1910 and d. 15 Oct 1992 in Portage, Kalamazoo Co., MI. He might have had a wife, Margaret M. Prentiss, who appears in the SSDI as b. 5 May 1910, obtained her SS# in MI, and d. 27 Sep 1992, Portage, Kalamazoo Co., MI.
- Wesley Prentiss who lived in Hesperia, MI in 1971. He is likely the Wesley W. Middleton, age 8, stepson, who appears in the 1910 household and probably a son of Viola by a prior marriage.
- Mrs. Harold Kaiser of Petoskey, MI in 1971. She, or her sister, below, is likely the "Minnie Prentiss" shown in the 1930 census as b. c. 1910, English Canada.
- Mrs. Vernon Herrington, Rochester, MI in 1971.
At the time of his death, Donald left 12 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
Donald Edward Prentiss, b. 1875, does not appear in the 1880 or 1900 census.
