By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
    Spring 2002 and Revised 3 Aug 2011

Note: This is an updated article based on our earlier Winter 1998 article on William Prentice of Carstairs and our earlier Fall 2001 article on William Prentice of Stobbe, Carstairs.

Using the records available from Records Office in Glascow, Scotland, the IGI, census records, and information from Michael Prentice, Carol Novak and from Karina Rancall's email of 18 Jul 2001, we have constructed the following tentative family tree.

    1. William Prentice of Carstairs, b. c. 1644-54. He married Catherine Henchlewood on 31 Dec 1675 at Carstairs. His children include:

    1. Margret Prentice, chr. 29 Oct 1673, Carstairs. She may be a daughter by a prior marriage.

    3. (unknown) Prentice, chr. 11 Jan 1677, Carstairs.
    4. James Prentice, chr. 16 Jan 1679, Carstairs. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]

    2. James Prentice, chr. 16 Jan 1679, is probably the same person as the James Prentice who married Isabell Forrest 23 Jan 1717 at Carstairs. Their children, born at Carstairs, included:

    1. Anne Prentice, chr. 9 Feb 1718. She m. James Wilson 27 Oct 1751, Carstairs.
    2. William Prentice, chr. 20 Mar 1720. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
    3. Isabell Prentice, chr. 28 Jan 1722.

    3. William Prentice, chr. 20 Mar 1720, Carstairs, married Katherine Wallace on 18 Aug 1745, Carluke, Scotland. Their children include

    1. William Prentice, chr. 1 Dec 1745, Carstairs. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [4]

3.1 (perhaps) Ann Prentice. According to Bob Brown of Osoyoos, British Columbia, Canada, Edinburgh records show that Ann Prentice was b. c. 1756 in Carstairs, Lanark, although neither Glasgow records nor the IGI show her birth or christening. It might be that her parents moved from Carstairs to the Edinburgh area after her birth and before her christening. The only known Prentice family living in Carstairs in that time frame is that of William Prentice and Katherine Wallace, and for that reason Ann is tentatively identified as their daughter.
