Thoughts About Our Prentice Book

One of my favorite cousins, Lois Demianew, sent me a Christmas card containing a poem by an unknown author entitled "The Spirit of Christmas." I've modified it, but only a little, to reflect my own thoughts about the thousands of names in our "Prentice" book.

Thoughts About Our Prentice Book

We have a village of folks,
all named in our book,
and every so often
I go take a look.

And that's when I realize
that the names are a part,
not of a book,
but a part of my heart.

And while there may be
no clear kinship link,
just finding them has changed me,
more than you think.

For once I've met someone,
the years cannot erase
the memory of the pleasant word
or the smile on a face.

So, never think
my writing's routine;
a book, just with covers
and pages between.

I'm only the total
of the folks I have met,
a part of the people
I'll never forget.
