Many friends heard with regret of the passing away of Mrs. George Prentice, which occurred in Collingwood on Saturday evening last. In October last Mrs. Prentice suffered severely from an attack of rheumatism, and it weakened her to such an extent that when pneumonia set in later she had not sufficient strength to shake it off.
Mrs. Prentice was a lady whose amiability and quiet Christian character was well known in the circle in which she moved. She was an honored member of the Methodist church, and with her husband and family lived for many years at Dunedin, worshipping at the Lavender church. Her remains were brought here by train on Tuesday morning and taken out to Lavender cemetery for interment, six sons acting as pallbearers. Deceased is survived by her husband, six sons and three daughters, all of whom excepting one daughter, Mrs. J. Creighton, were privileged to be present at her bedside and take a last farewell before she died. The members of the family are:
Albert, of north Nottawasaga; William and George of Honeywood; Andrew, on the homestead; Harry, of Collingwood; Wesley, of Winnipeg; Mrs. F. Lackie, of Beeton; Mrs. L. Creighton, of Alameda, Sask., and Mrs. E. H. Lindsey, of Tottenham.
George and Mary farmed at Tweed, Ontario near Peterborough, then moved to Dunedin. They came as far as Orangeville by train. From Orangeville, George, along with the two oldest boys, Albert and William, drove their livestock to a farm near Shelburne owned by the Tates. Mary and the other children came on to Shelburne on the train and were met there by Mr. Tate, who took them to his farm to await the men and their livestock. They then moved on to their newly purchased farm at Dunedin. George built the house that still stands today (2003) on the farm. It is a lovely two-story brick house. All but Edith were born and made the trip from Tweed with their parents. Edith was born at Dunedin.

Is James Prentice related to Michael Prentice of Carlow and his descenants?
Perhaps not. Carlow is a township in Hastings Co. The only hamlet of any size in the township is Boulter which is located about 10 miles east of the village of Bancroft. Carlow is approx. 35 miles north of Huntingdon township. By email of 11 Sep 2001, Brandt Zatterberg (no kin) advises that the townships in that region are set out in a rectangular grid pattern as follows:
McClure Wicklow Bangor Herschel Monteagle Carlow Faraday Dungannon Mayo Wollaston Limericak Cashel Lake Turler Grimsthorpe Marmoda Madoc Elzevir Rawdon Huntingdon Hungerford Sidney Thurlow TyendinagaHe also advises that the pattern of settlement was that major settlements began in the southern townships after the Revolution (1784). The middle townships were opened up as sons and daughters of the orignally grants required their own land (1810-1840). The northern townships are still sparsely populated by their 'serious' growth is as a result of the lumber trade (1850-1870). The north of Hastings saw further growth nearing the end of the 19th century with the discover of mineral deposits.
