Charles Prentice of Marylebone, London, England
    By Linus Joseph Dewald, Editor
    Fall 2002 and Revised 25 Sep 2006

Kerry Prentice, by email of 10 Jul 2002, brings to our attention the following family which we have augmented with census information:

    1. Charles Prentice was probably b. c. 1790-1800. He was a Bootmaker in 1845. Charles m. Elizabeth.

We do not yet know, but there would seem to be a good chance that Charles and his wife, Elizabeth, are the same Charles and Elizabeth who appear in our Fall 2003 article about Charles Prentice of Westminster . The time frames, general locations and years of the children's birth are consistent with each other. They may also be the same Charles and Elizabeth Prentice, both b. c. 1796, who appear in the 1841 census in St. Marylebone, Middlesex. Further investigation is needed.

Known children of Charles and Elizabeth are:

    1. William Prentice, b. 1821. . . . . . [2]
    2. Henry Prentice, b. 1825. . . . . . [3]
    3. Mary Jane Prentice, b. 1833, bap. 24 Feb 1833, All Souls, St Marylebone, London.

    2. William Prentice, bap. 20 Jul 20, 1821, St Mary's, St Marylebone Road, Marylebone, London. In 1845 he was a Bootmaker and lived at Edward's Place, Paddington, Middlesex.

He married Jane Highsted on 6 Aug 1845 in St Mary's Church, Paddington, Middlesex. She was the daughter of James Highsted and was b. before 1824 and d. 1879. Pancras (per Kerry Prentice, email, 23 Jun 2003). In 1847 they lived at 3 Little Chesterfield Street, Cavendish Square, Marylebone, London. Known children:

    1. Henry Prentice, b. c. 1843 and appears in the 1851 census. His birth is about 2 years before William's 1845 marriage to Jane. That might indicate Henry was a son of a prior marriage of William, or of Jane, or adopted, or perhaps that he is their son conceived before marriage (per Kerry Prentice, email, 23 Jun 2003).
    2. William Joseph Prentice, b. 26 Nov 1847, 3 Little Chesterfield Street, Cavendish Square, Marylebone, London. Bap. 20 Dec 1847, St Mary's. St. Marylebone Road, Marylebone, London/
    3. Mary Ann Jane Prentice, b. 1846 and bap. 25 May 1846, St Mary's.
    4. Jane Ann Prentice, b. 1851 and bap. 2 Mar 1851, St Mary's.
    5. Charles Prentice, b. 1853 and bap. 5 Jun 1853, St Mary's. He m. Margaret Chamuffin on 28 Jun 1874, All Souls, Marylebone, London. He is probably the Charles Prentice appearing in the 1891 Paddington census as a boarder and without any wife or children named.
    6. Albert Prentice, b. 1868 and bap. 5 Jun 1868, All Souls, St Marylebone, London.

    3. Henry Prentice, bap. 4 Sep 1825, St. Marylebone, Middlesex. He first appears in the 1841 census in St. Marylebone, Middlesex, as a 15 year old without his parents and seems to be in an institution of some sort on "James Street". In the 1851 census he lived in St. Pancras, Middlesex with his wife, Ann, and daughter, Elizabeth. In 1861 William and his wife lived in St. Marylebone, All Saints Parish, Middlesex. In 1881 Henry was a Bootmaker and lived on Abbey Road, Merton, Surrey. Not in 1891 or 1901 census.

He m. Ann Trowbridge on 2 Aug 1846, Old Church, St. Pancras, London. She was b. St. Clement, Middlesex.Known children:

    1. Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1850, St. Pancras, Middlesex. At home in 1861.
    2. Mary Prentice, b. 1852, St. Marylebone, Middlesex. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [4]
    3. Louisa Prentice, b. c. 1855 St. Marylebone, Middlesex. At home in 1861.
    4. Maria Prentice, b. c. 1857, St. Marylebone, Middlesex. At home in 1861.
    5. Harriet Prentice, b. c. 1860, St. Marylebone, Middlesex. At home in 1861.
    6. Henry Prentice, b. 1862. In 1881 he was a Bricklayer and lived on Abbey Road, Merton, Surrey.

    4. Mary Prentice, b. 1852, St. Marylebone, Middlesex. At home in 1861.

She m. Thomas Taphorse who was b. 1852 in Merton, Surrey. In 1881 they lived on Abbey Road, Merton, Surrey and he was then a General Labourer. Not in 1891 or 1901 census. Known children:

    1. Harry Taphorse, b. 1877, Merton, Surrey.
    2. Sarah Taphorse, b. 1879, Merton, Surrey.
    3. William Taphorse, b. 1880, Merton, Surrey.

    Who are Charles Prentice's Parents?

Although only a guess at this point, Charles might be the Charles Prentice shown in the IGI who was chr. 6 Jan 1799, Saint Luke, Chelsea, London, son of Robert Prentice and Mary. Other children of Robert and Mary shown in the IGI are:

    1. Richard Prentice, chr. 24 Oct 1802 Saint Luke, Chelsea, London, England
    2. William Prentice, chr. 29 Mar 1807 Saint Luke, Chelsea, London, England
    3. Joseph Prentice, b. 6 Jun 1808 Chelsea, London, England
    4. Joseph Prentice, chr. 4 Oct 1812 Saint Luke, Chelsea, London, England
