    We are helping Patricia Hammond of 19 Warnes Road, Mitcham, Victoria, Australia, in tracing her roots. Here is what we have so far:

    1. Alexander AdamPrentice may have been b. c. 1825-1835, perhaps in, or near, Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he married in 1854.

    He m. Helen Smith on 4 Jan 1854, Barony, Lanarkshire (per IGI). They had 1 or more children, including:

    1. Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1856. . . . . . . . . [2]

    2. Alexander Prentice, b. 1 Aug 1855, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and d. 26 Jan 1899, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He had quite likely emigrated to Australia before 1879 when his son, Alexander, was born. In Sands & McDougall's Directory of 1896, his address was given as 9 Martin-st, South Melbourne.

    Alexander m. Mary Ann Flannery in 1879 in Victoria. She was b. c. 1858, Sandridge, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and d. 1896 in South Melbourne. She was the dau. of William Flannery and Julia Harrigan. Their children were: (ref. death dates is Karen McCormack's email of 2 Jan 2001)

    1. Alexander Prentice, b./chr. 14 Jul 1879, Ahil, Victoria. He d. in East Melbourn in 1914, age 35 years.
    2. Bertie Prentice, b./chr. 1892, South Melbourne.
    3. William John Prentice, b./chr. 1881, Emerald Hill, Melbourne. . . . . . . . [3]
    4. Thomas Prentice, b./chr. 1883, Melbourne. He d. 1940, probably at Fitzroy, Melbourne, at the age of 56 years.
    5. Archibald Prentice, b./chr. 1886, Melbourne, and d. Aug 1950. Parkville, Melbourne, age about 66 years..
    6. John Ernest Prentice, b./chr. 1888, Melbourne. He d. in Port Melbourne in 1918, age 30 years..
    7. Mary Ellen Prentice, b./chr. 1890, South Melbourne. She apparently m. a Mr. Eaton. She d. as Mary Ellen Eaton in 1971 in Caulfield, Melbourne, at the age of 81.
    8. Bertie Prentice, son b./chr.1892, South Melbourne. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[4]
    9. Ethel Mary Prentice, b./chr. 1894, South Melbourne. She apparently m. a Mr. Dextor. She d. as Ethel Mary Dexter in 1977 at the age of 83. Her place of death is unclear; it might be Glen Iris, Glen Waverley or Glenroy.

    3. William John Prentice, b./chr. 1881, Emerald Hill, Melbourne, Victoria. He d. in 12 Aug 1970 in Hawthorn, Melbourne at the age of 88. Bur. in The Necropolis, Melbourne. His address given as 384 Riversdale Road, Hawthorn in the death notice of their daughter-in-law Avis, in 1952.

    He m. Catherine Frances Batchelder in 1903, Victoria, Australia. She was b. 21 or 27 Mar 1881 in Emerald Hill, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and d. 8 Jun 1967 in Emerald Hill, Melbourne, Victoria. Bur. in The Necropolis, Melbourne, Victoria. She was the dau. of John Phillip Batchelder and Mary Ann Leeke. Ancestor Charts for her can be found at Ancestry.com and Ancestry.com/tree ..

      1. Pamela Prentice, b. 1931, Armadale, Melbourne, Victoria and d. that same year, 1931.
      2. (dau.) Prentice. She m. and had 3 children.
      Ernest m. 2nd Hazel Pearl Frazer in Victoria. She was b. 1905 in Fitzroy North, Melbourne.

    4. Bertie Prentice, b. 1892, South Melbourne. He d. in 1951 in Ormond, Melbourne, at the age of 58. Bur, The Necropolis, Melbourne. According to Jack Batchelder, Bertie was blinded by mustard gas during World War 1. He was cremated and his ashes scattered.

    . He m. Annie Batchelder in 1917 in Victoria, Australia. She was b. c. 1894 in Melbourne and d. Jun 1948 in Melbourne. She was the dau. of John Phillip Batchelder and Mary Anne Leeke (see above).Children per Anncestry.com:

    1. Murray Prentice.
    2. Alan Geoffrey Prentice, b. c. 1919 in Oakleigh, Melbourne, Victoria, and d. 1979, Cheltenham, Melbourne, age 60 years.

    Who are Alexander Prentice's Parents?

    Given the information that Alexander Prentice may have been b. c. 1825-1835, perhaps in, or near, Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he m. Helen Smith on 4 Jan 1854, we checked the 1851 and 1861 Scotland but did not find an Alexander and Helen. They may not have been m. in 1851 and may have emigrated to Australia before 1861.
